Family stories indicate that my ancestors, Patrick (O)Fallon and Catherine O'Neil, were married about 1835 in Killoscobe, probably in Menlough RC parish.  Further information indicates that they may have been born in Killoscobe, Abbeyknockmoy or Monivea parish.  Are there any records existing that could give a clue concerning this?  Do the surnames Fallon and/or O'Neil occur in any of the local records?  Thank you for considering this request.  Larry O'Keefe

  • Hi Larry

I have looked at the parish records and there is no Fallon-O'Neil marriage recorded in the parish

There are 2 O'Neill brides at that time but marrying a Miskell and a Kelly so no similarities

There are 2 Fallon grooms in the records but marrying a Dempsey and a Noone

Fallon is not an name in the area being more of a Roscommon name so having 2 in the registers at the time was unusual and might indicate an outside possibilty However there are no Fallon baptisms at all and the name is not known in the parish

There are still O'Neills in the parish - oral sources say that they are remnamts of the scattered army of James of England who were defeated at the Battle of Aughrim 1691

What are the sources that you have?

  • Hi Larry & Martin
    www.rootsireland.ie/ has this one:
    Date of Marriage: 03-Mar-1835
Parish / District: BALLINASLOE County: Co. Galway
    Husband Wife
    Name: Patrick Fallon Catherine Rutledge
There are also 2 Patrick Fallon birth/baptism records - both in Loughrea.
    No Catherine O'Neills however
The Tithe Applotments have 2 John Fallons in Monivea in 1827 http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/

  • Hi Martin & Col,

Thank you very much for your research and your response.  I'm not surprised you didn't find the marriage record.  The information came from a cousin who said he saw it in Killoscobe RC records when he was in Ireland, but I was skeptical since he had only a year, no actual date.

I also have my doubts about the name of Patrick Fallon's wife.  I think she may have been a Noon rather than an O'Neil, and her name may not have been Catherine.  Patrick's marriage however would have to have been sometime before 1840 because his son, Patrick, was born around 1840.

One other clue:  Patrick had a brother, Joseph Fallon, who we believe married a Mannion in 1845 in Ballygar RC parish and then went to England.  Don't have the details but I believe the year is accurate.  Is Ballygar anywhere near Abbeyknockmoy/Killoscobe?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Larry

  • Hi Larry

The records I have are transcripts but I have come across omissions before

Was your cousin in Menlough and saw the records there ? If so then it is possible that there may be a record which was not transcribed and therefore not on rootsireland

Ballygar is a distance of c20 km from Killoscobe depending on where the Fallons might have been if they had lived there

What info do you have regarding Abbeyknockmoy? That would be further west of Killoscobe whereas Ballygar is north east
