Looking for great grandfather

Have a look at the 1901 and 1911 censuses, because in addition to scans of original family records, they included censuses of entire streets, with names and addresses.

Look at the scans labelled "House and Building return (Form B1)" - and the additional pages - at the bottom of these pages (ignore the top part of each page, which is for my Kilkeel family who also lived in Greencastle - as a bootmaker!). These scans list everyone living in Greencastle st.

thanks a lot for that. I did not know green castle was actually the street name, so that's good, I thought it was an area of Kilkeel. Unfortunately they had moved to Liverpool by by that date but will look for the other children this way, might show something.

There is a townland named Greencastle near Kilkeel, as well as a Greencastle street in the town of Kilkeel. Greencastle townland is three or four miles from Kilkeel and is on Carlingford Lough.

Griffiths Valuation for 1863 lists a Robert, Thomas, 2 Patricks & a Margaret Sloane in Greencastle townland, so I suspect that may be where your family originated. Nicholas & Hannah?s children?s? birth certificates will contain their address.

Hannah?s marital status on the 1891 census appears to be ?married? so that indicates Nicholas died after 1891. I can see 2 Nicholas Sloan deaths registered in Kilkeel in the period 1872 ? 1900. One on 26.4.1894 aged 64 and the other 30.10.1895 aged 62. You can view the certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the ?search registrations? option:

You say that the family lived in Greencastle but you don?t know the exact address. Greencastle is the address. In rural Ireland, your townland was your address and the postman, and anybody else who mattered, knew where in the townland you lived. There were no street names or house numbers in rural areas (and that is still the case today in some rural parts of Ireland).

Greencastle consists of 626 acres of mostly farmland, and in 1911 there were about 51 households there including 6 Sloan(e) households :

I had a look in the revaluation records for the 1860s to see if I could locate Nicholas?s home but it is not listed in Greencastle. Possibly he was lodging with someone else, or his house might be of too low a value to be listed.

hi, I am learning so much today, guess I will be busy this evening looking at all the suggested records. I have already looked on the groni website and still have some credits so will look again. Nicholas is down as a farmer, shoemaker on my grandads marriage cert. I think he must have died prior to 1891 as then Patrick and his mother were in Liverpool, but that may not be the case, but would be good to know. Thanks again

The 1891 census appears to indicate that Nicholas was still alive then (census was taken in early April 1891). HAve you looked for Hannah in the 1901 census? Is she a widow by then?
