Can someone please help me find information about my family? I have a photo of Dorothea Bryanton Kenney Peck, marked "Castlebar, Mayo, Ireland." I found a record of the family in Fishkill and Wappingers Falls, Dutchess County, New York, from 1850-1900. Dorothea's family included James (Jane?), Mary, Sarah, Robert, and Thomas. In 1870, Thomas lived next door to Dorothea with his wife Susannah and their children Alina and Mary.

I have found information about the Pecks here in the U.S., but the only records I have found relating to Ireland are Census notations that the family immigrated to New York in 1850. I would be happy to share more information if anyone is interested.

Thank you for your time.

Barbara

Can you clarify if Dorothea was unmarried or married a Peck?

There were no Pecks listed in the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Mayo. I also looked at the Tithe Applotment listings for Mayo and located an 1825 record for a John Peck living in Barrackhill townland in Burrishoole civil parish. Burrishoole is to the west of Castlebar.

  • Barbara:

I searched all of Ireland on Roots Ireland for a baptismal record and also a marriage record for Dorothea  with no success. I did a 20 year search around 1816 for the baptismal record and 1835 for the marriage record.

Many churches do not have records back to 1816. I did not have her religious denomination. The Catholic records for Castlebar start in 1838. The Methodist church starts in 1829. I did not see that Roots had Presbyterian or Church of Ireland records for Castlebar.

  • Hello,

I live in New York and believe this is part of my family. My grandmother Dora Peck Webster's parents were Robert K Peck JR and Esther Olsen. Robert K Peck Jr's father is Robert K Peck Sr, sister are Sara and Mary. Robert K Peck Sr married Catherine Secor. Their parents were James and Dorothea. This is according to my research on Ancestry.com. I can confirm they did live in the Wappingers Falls/Fishkill area of Dutchess County in New York. I am unsure of who Thomas is.

I am actually going to Ireland next 9/3-9/11 in Dublin and Cork. This is a part of our family history I have had trouble researching!

  • Dear Andrea:  I’m delighted to hear that you will be coming to Ireland next week to research your ancestry.  One place that you should definitely visit is the Castlebar Library as they have a Local History section and there is a staff member there who may be able to assist you with your research.  The link is below:

Have a wonderful trip and please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

    Hi Andrea Bartolomeo,

Thanks for the information. I am so happy for you to be going to Ireland. I hope to go some day. This is some information I found that may help:

1870 Census, Fishkill, Dutchess, NY, two families in the same house:

Dorothea Peck  1870       Female 50           White    1819-1820            Ireland

James Peck         1870       Female 54           White    1815-1816            Ireland

Mary Peck           1870       Female 20           White    1849-1850            Ireland

Sarah Peck          1870       Female 18           White    1851-1852            Ireland

Robert Peck       1870       Male      9              White    1860-1861            New York

Thomas Peck     1870       Male      39           White    1830-1831            Ireland

Susanna Peck    1870       Female 40           White    1829-1830            New York

Alina Peck           1870       Female 13           White    1856-1857            New York

Mary Peck           1870       Female 10           White    1859-1860            New York

Ten year old Mary Peck later married Smith Bumstead, who was born in 1849 in NY. A photo of Mary is attached.

I also found records of a Dorothy M Peck of Kings County who died in 1917. I don't think that is the same Peck family, but I don't know. Safe travels, and happy hunting in the records!

  • Hi Barbara,

Sorry I was thinking you were from Ireland.  Are we distant cousins? Do you have the picture of Dorothea? The Peck's did come through Long Island before settling in Dutchess County, so it could be a relative!  I am on Ancestry.com. Let me know if you are and perhaps we can connect on the trees.

    Hi Andrea,

I am in California; I'm not on Ancestry. The photo of Dorothea is attached. There is a notation on the back:

"Dorothea Bryanton Kenney Peck, Castlebar, Mayo, Ireland."

Again, safe travels. I hope you make exciting discoveries.
