Joy Family of Daugh

I looked at the Duagh records and I think your analysis is on target. There were three other baptismal records where the parents were Maurice Joy and Mary O'Donnell. The children were John, Margaret and Catherine. Unfortunately, none of the records show a townland. Are youw aware of any of the names for Maurice's siblings?

I also looked at the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Duagh civil parish and there was a Maurcie Joy in Knockalougha townland. Not sure if this is your ggg grandfather.

Thank you so much for your quick reply.I noticed that  are also two John Joys in Griffiths. I also found the births of the other children just recently. I think that John and Margaret are are his parents,  I am going to look at Connecticut USA  records for his marriages. Maybe there will be more info . He was married at least 2-3 times. Apparently  he was a character!

Maurice Joy and Mary O'Donnell were living in the townland of Knockalougha between 1833 and 1847. There were six children:

Margaret (6 Jun 1833)

Maurice (4 Jan 1835)

John (24 Mar 1837)

Catherine (17 Nov 1841)

Julia (4 Sep 1844)

William (12 Jan 1847)

Hard to say why your g-g-grandfather would have said that his father was John. There was a John Joy living in Knockalougha contemporaneous to Maurice snr. They may well be brothers which would mean that your g-g-grandfather had an uncle called John. Strange that he would call his father John. This John was most likely the John Joy who sponsored your g-g-grandfather's baptism. (the other sponsor was Julia Joy.)

Thank you so much for your reply. I think you are right. The "John Joy" was from his death certificate and the info was only as valid as the person that gave the information. I will adjust my records.I thought it was strange also. He never had any male children to continue the naming pattern.

I am looking for any information on the Joy family from Foildarrig townland in Duagh. The family I am interested in is William Joy b. 1804 who married Catherine Wingle. They had at least 2 daughters, one named Mary b. 1835 and the other named Julia. Julia emigrated to the US and married Andrew Logan.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland ( which has Duagh marriage records) and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie which has Duagh baptismal and marriage records. You can see below that the parents were married in 1831. I found three children as follows: John Baptized November 27, 1831 Mary baptized July 6, 1835 Julia baptized July 30 1837. I assume your family emigrated after 1837? Here is a link to the Duagh parish register if you wnat to see if there were any other children. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0668

UPDATE: I went to see if there was a Catherine Wingle baptismal record (there was no record) and I found a Maurice Joy baptismal record for August 23,  1823  which assumed was a typo so I searched the register and sure enough he was baptized August 23 1833 so you have a fourth child

Ref;  JOY FAMILY  - The enclosed attachments may be of interest concerning the Joy family of Knockalogough 

 The Hanrahan headstone contains the name of Hannah Joy who was the sister of John Joy.  She lived with the Hanrahans' on their Knockalogough farm.  She is photographed in around 1970 with my father Denis Roche.     (michael roche)
