My Great Grandfather was born in Borrisokane, Tipperary (according to his Marriage Certificate)  in about 1837. He emigrated to Australia on the ship Parsee in 1858.  In the ship records it shows that he could read and write. He married in Victoria, to Louisa Morrall and had 5 children.  He died in Hamilton, Victoria in 1922.

His marriage certificate shows that he is known as Austin Tully, but his father is listed as Michael Lodwille, a schoolteacher and his mother is Sarah Tully. I would love to have any further information. Thank you Leonie Peters

  • Hi Leonie
Here's the closest match from www.rootsireland.ie/:
Name: Austin Tully Date of Birth:
    Date of Baptism: 05-Aug-1832
    Address: Not Recorded Parish/District: LONGFORD
    Gender: Male County Co. Longford
    Denomination: Roman Catholic
Father: Michael Tully Mother: Julia Ledwith
    Occupation: Not Recorded

    Informant 2: Joan H.

I guess Ledwith could be transcribed as Lodwille but then you have Julia V Sara & Longford V Tipperary!
if it helps, there were lots of inaccuracies due to illiteracy & poor quality records.

  • Dear Col, thank you for your quick response.  It certainly is a possibility - the Michael Tully would explain why he used Tully as a surname and the Ledwith could be seen as Lodwille or Ledwille and the names could easily have been switched around on the certificate. I will explore further using Longford and the changed surnames. I do appreciate your assistance. Thanks, Leonie
