James Hughes of Kilkeel, Co. Down, Ireland

I am looking for information regarding my great-grandfather, James Hughes of Kilkeel and his wife, Bridget Sloan.

James Hughes was born around Dec. 1822 and emigrated from Kilkeel, Co. Down, Ireland to Hubbardton, Vermont in USA prior to 1859. (His application for Naturalization in USA listed his birth year as 1831, so that maybe a transcription error.)

I believe that his wife, Bridget Sloan (b.1833) came over later and they were married around 1860.

James Hughes had a brother John Hughes. John married a Catherine Sheils (or Sheels)

I am looking for the name of the FATHER of James Hughes and any other direct ancestors that may be found.

The marriage record of John H & Mary Shiels is on both IGI (Family Search) & www.rootsireland.ie/ but neither has his parents' names!

I couldn't find an irish marriage record for her & James so your theory looks right.

I couldn't find any Hugheses in Down in the early Irish censuses or tithe applotments but there are 10 in kilkeel in Griffiths Valuation 1863-4 (free site)
