Patrick Joseph Breheny Born 17 Mar 1846 in County Mayo, Ireland from death certificate 03 Apr 1942 in Guthrie Co, Iowa, USA. Gravestone says born 1847; various census records give birth year as 1849-1854.  One census he records his parents' names as James and Anna Regan Breheny. Patrick immigrated 1870-1872.  Thank you to Sean B. for helping us to identify the 'niece' living in Patrick's home in 1880 Madison Township, Madison County, Iowa, USA as Ellen Towey, daughter of Anthony Towey & Mary Breheny.

We believe another man near Patrick in that census may have been a sibling, or a cousiin; Dominic Breheny born 1848-1851. Both were quarry hands initially, later Patrick was a farmer and Dominic was listed on census records as 'a cripple'.

Dominic moved on after 1880 to Valley Junction, Polk County, Iowa, USA, where he was employed by the railroad.  We find no records for Dominic after 1915.

Many of the RC parishes in Co. Mayo do not have records back to the 1850 time period. I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and located an 1853 baptismal record for a James Breheny (or variant spelling). The parents were Patrick and Mary (not Anne). The record was in the Carracastle RC church which is in East Mayo very close to the Co. Roscommon border. The corresponding civil parish is Kilbeagh which is more commonly known as Charlestown/Carracastle currently. I also checked the 1856 Griffiths Valuation records for all of Co. Mayo and only two James Breheny (or variant) records came up both in Kilbeagh parish. My grandfather came from this parish and I do know that Regan is also a common name in the area.

I forgot to mention that I could not locate a baptismal record for Dominick.

There were six Breheny or variant spelling families in the area in the 1901 census.

  • Thank you so much for looking for Patrick and Dominick, and their parents James and Anna Regan Breheny. I know how difficult it is when so little information has been provided. I am currently looking for local reords here, like Naturalization records which might provide more details. Thanks again.

  • We think we have found a clue for the Parish Name.  In 1900 Dominick Breheny, living in Polk County, Iowa, believed to be the brother of Patrick named above in my initial post, has living in his home another Dominick, age 24 from Ireland and identified as a nephew.  We have located this younger man's passage record which identifies his place of residence in Ireland as Ballaghadereen, which we understand now has since become part of County Roscommon but was then in County Mayo. This younger man is listed as Dominick Breheney on the manifest, a variation in spelling. The census record shows a birth date for Dominick as April 1876. On the ship manifest he is listed as 25 yrs of age.

  • Margaret:

Great clue and it confirms what I told you previously. Ballaghaderreen is real close to Kilbeagh parish and an emigrant would show the nearest town on any documents rather than the townland where they lived. (As an aside my grandmother came from a townland one mile outside of Ballaghaderreen and my grandfather came from a townland about three miles from Ballaghaderreen).

I looked on Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for Dominick in 1876. There is one in 1877 in the Ballaghaderreen church. The parents were Thomas and Atty (short for Attracta). I could not determine the maiden name for Atty. (The Ballaghaderreen church is the Cathedral of the Annunication and St. Nathys which is the cathedral for the Diocese of Achonry).

I looked at the 1901 census trying to find this couple. I did not find a Thomas and Atty. I did find a Thomas and Mary Breheny in Currinah townland which corresponds to the record I found in the Griffiths. Currinah was transferred to Co. Roscommon from Mayo in 1898 and is part of Castlemore parish ( I'm the Ireland XO liaison for that parish). I'm not totally sure this is the correct family and more research would be needed. See the 1901 and 1911 census records below. Note: Mary had five living children in 1911.

I found this civil birth index record for the 1877 Dominick Breheny. You can get a copy from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record would show the names of the parents ( and hopefully the maiden name) and where the family was living. If you want to get a copy, let me know and I will forward instructions.

    Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

print out the birth form, fill it out to the best of your ability, make sure you ask for a copy, include the info from the index record: year of birth, registration district and volume and page number. The form asks for a credit card number. Mail the request to the GRO address in Co. Roscommon (address is included with the form). Although you mail the request, you can ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you. I usually get my copies in less than two weeks. First class postage to Ireland is around $1.20.

  • Thank you Sean for your kind message.  I am happy to share information with you but we have so little information available to us here about our ancestor, Patrick Joseph Breheny, that I'm not sure how we can identify our family connection if any exists.  If you have more information, please let us know.

  • Atty and Thomas Breheny are listed as Judge in the 1901 census if you click on the link I sent you on other researchers Sylvie Carter has set up a website.I think the Breheny's from that area originated in cloonlumney Ballyoughter Breheny Atty's name was Morrisroe which appears a few times in the family tree Thier family went to America also Montana finally. My GG Uncle was married to a Regan from Currinah and Regan also appears a few times I think they may have married cousins or second cousins.

  • Do you know where abouts in England he went to as my GGrandfather did the same firstly to Ormskirk in Lancashire then he settled in Wigan.I have come across a Patrick in Cheshire on the English census.Breheny isn't that common a name even in Mayo. From the civill records I sent you there are only two Dominick Brehenys who were born in the 1870's one Atty/Agnes Morrisroe
and Thomas Breheny's son Cloonlumney and the second my GGrandfather's cousin son Mary Morrisroe and Thomas Breheny son whose father was named James from Currinah now in Roscommon previously Mayo. These are all very near Carracastle/Ballaghdereen.It may be possible to find more info from the land books on the Griffiths valuation as this traces the occupation of the land usually to Father Mother son or daughter.

  • I'very just checked the 1901 census and Dominick is listed on the household of Thomas and Atty/Agnes Breheny/Judge in Cloonlumney so unless he had returned from Iowa it only leaves Dominic from Currinah the son of Thomas Breheny and Mary Morrisroe, they lived next door to my GGrandfather whose brother Martin took over the farm James and Thomas Thier parents are on the Griffiths valuation.Do you know what happend to Dominick Breheny your ancestors nephew in America?

  • Sean (and Roger)

Today I tried to add a profile for our ancestor, Patrick Joseph Breheny 1846-1942.  I hope that I chose the correct location.  I didn't realize that I would not be able to edit it after I created the profile so it does not have very much information. The fields are not easily identified and I am unfamiliar with the format used here. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Going forward I will try to add as much as I can at one time and be patient to wait for the reviewers to accept the additions. Thank you for your help and suppport.
