Hello,

I am at my wit's end researching my 3GGF, Francis Kinney (Born abt 1812 in Ireland, died abt 1880 in Brooklyn, NY, USA).

I have been unable to find any immigration records, ship manifests, bank records, anything to help me determine where in Ireland he came from. What makes it harder is I am not even positive if I should be looking at the surname KINNEY or KENNEY, as I have seen it both ways. (I go with Kinney as it appears that way more often in US census reports.)

I am starting here in Co. Galway as I understand the Kinney surname is most common here.

Here is what I do know:

Francis Kinney's wife Mary (unknown maiden name) was born Ireland abt 1811 & died Brooklyn, NY 1886.

Only one of their children was born in Ireland that I can tell, the rest were born in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

Son, James Kinney born Ireland abt 1838.

I am guessing the family immigrated to the US between 1838 and 1843.

Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated. Incidentally, my sister and I have just planned our very first trip to Ireland this May. We are really looking forward to our visit!

Many Co. Galway churches do not have records back to the period of your interest. I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and there were no James Kinney baptismal records in Co. Galway for the period 1833-1843. However, there were a number of James Kenney records in that period but only one in 1839 had a father named Francis. The mothers names was Bridget and the record was in St. Nicholas church in Galway city. That church is now the beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St. Nicholas which is the cathedral for the Diocese of Galway. http://www.galwaycathedral.ie/

There is a large car park to the left of the Cathedral as you are facing the Cathedral which costs 4 euros but you can park there and walk into the heart of Galway City ( Eyre Square, Shop St. etc)

I have no idea if this is the record you are looking for but at least it is a lead.
