~~I am looking for information on a John Hoban (born @ 1856 in Castlebar) and his wife, Mary McDonnell (born @ 1863 in Ballycastle).  We believe they were married on 27 Feb 1887 in Westport.  They had six children; Teresa (1888), John (1892), Margaret (1899), Tim (1893) Mary Jane (1890 and Nora (1896).  I have no information on John’s parents, but we believe he had at least one brother, possible Thomas.  Mary McDonnell’s parents were Dominick and Honoria Clifford.  Mary’s siblings were Bridget, Dominick and possibly Ann.

  • This may be the family in 1901:

I?d be inclined to order a  copy of the marriage certificate to obtain John?s father?s name and details of where he was living at that time.

The marriage was registered in Westport in Jan ? Mar 1887 Vol 4, page 376.

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for ?4.  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can?t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don?t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (which should be on the certificate, unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

  • 1911 census for the same family:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Erriff/Glenummera/745117/

The census records that they had a total of 6 children and all were  still alive in 1911.

Glenummera (where the family lived) is beside Doo Lough, about 10 miles north of Leenane. Not a heavily populated area. Just a couple of households there in the 1911 census.
