Hello! We recently found an ancestral connection to Killala. Hooray.

My great-great grandmother Nancy (Kearney) Rogan was from Killala. We just received her obituary  from Oconomowoc, WI where she died in 1880. The document actually says "Killaloe, County Mayor." We can only assume this was a mis-transcription of Killala, County Mayo because several other documents we have about her mention County Mayo, but with no specific community. She was born on April 24, 1818, according to the obituary. I'll attach the obituary below.

Now, we want to continue zeroing in on where the family is from. We have a theory we are testing through some help from the Adergoole Parish page here on IrelandXO.

Nancy's husband, my great-great grandfather James Rogan emigrated from County Mayo, but no US records say where in Mayo. We do have reports that his father was named Bartholomew and never left County Mayo.

James was born in Mayo on January 10, 1808 and emigrated around 1840 with his wife Nancy (Kearney) Rogan - married in Mayo in 1838. As a side note, James and Nancy returned to Ireland in 1845, then turned around and went back to the US around 1847 - this brief return to Ireland seems to stand out as unusual, so I wanted to include it here. The obituary has different dates, but this is the clearest story we have of their path to Wisconsin.

So, the only sign we have of a Bartholomew Rogan in Mayo is from the 1823-37 Tithe Applotment Books, showing a Bartly Rogan in Killala diocese, Addergoole parish, "Cloggernaugh" townsland.

(Our initial post here on IrelandXO got a comment that also spotted this Bartly in the tithe books.)

We do not know for sure this is our Bartholomew. That's what we want to test.
The reason we are keying in on this path is that James in Wisconsin had a son Bartholomew who went by Bartley. Another son of James had Bartholomew as a middle name.

So, for now let's assume he IS our Bartholomew Rogan.
He is the only Rogan in Addergoole in the tithe records.

Jumping ahead to Griffith's Valuation, there are just a few records of Rogans in Addergoole.
We have Bridget and Patrick Rogan in East Clogernagh in 1857.
For Clogernagh East, the research website linked below then shows Bernard Rogan in 1901
And Tommie Rogan listed as "today".

So, we're wondering if there is any way with parish records, or online tools, to confirm this chain of Rogans has a connection back to the James Rogan who emigrated to the US and settled in Wisconsin.

We are currently working on contacting Tommie Rogan - an Ireland XO member reached out to him and passed along his address. We await a response to our note to him. Maybe there is a family bible or other family story/document that can help us document the connection to a James Rogan, son of Bartholomew, born in 1808 who emigrated around 1839-40.

Please let me know your thoughts about this approach to testing a connection. Do you think this could work? How would you proceed? Is there any help folks in Killala can provide to move this process forward?

We have one other avenue to research. Nancy's father was Patrick Kearney - we assume now from Killala. We have stories here in the US that Patrick was in the "King's Guards" of the English Army, served in India, Gibraltar, and Egypt, was six foot six inches tall, had brothers who were taller, and returned to Ireland (likely Mayo) in his final years. Can anyone help us identify a Patrick Kearney (or Carney) with that background from Killala or nearby who could be Nancy's father?

Thanks so much!

I know you are looking for confirmation of your hypothesis, however, I don't think your Rogans came from Cloggernaugh. Cloggernaugh is over 50 kilometers from Killala and is much closer to Castlebar.Emigrants usually said they were from the nearest "Big" town.

In my review of the 1856 Griffiths, I would be inclined to believe the Rogans and Kearneys were from Ballysakeery parish or possibly Killala parish.

Church records for Ballysakeery and Killala parishes don't start until 1844 (Ballysakeery) and 1852 (Killala). Records are on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place the RC parish registers online for free searching.

Another suggestion is to look into autosomal DNA testing and since you are a Rogan you could also look into the Y-DNA test. Autosomal DNA testing allows you to look for distant cousins on both your paternal and maternal lines.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'd be glad to continue to assist.
