Looking for any assistance in discovering the antecedants of Anthony Brady born 1834 and his spouse Bridget Walsh born 1836. They were from Caherhurley (I don't know the parish) with Gerad Madden of East Clare telling me they came from a place called Firbank. They seem to be the only Catholic Brady family at that time from Caherhurley. They, with children, emigrated to Australia in 1879.

Can anyone help in identifying Anthony and Bridget's parents and grandparents and where Firbank is/was located. I'm guessing that Firbank was the name of their dwelling.

Caherhurley townland is in Kilnoe civil parish which is in East Co. Clare. The church records for that area would be in the parish of Kilnoe and Tuamgraney. Records for that parish go back to 1832, however, they are not currently online. Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place the RC parish registers online for free searching.

I looked up the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilnoe parish. There were three Bradys listed all in Caherhurley: John, James and William. Likely one of the three was the father of Anthony. What was the name of the oldest son of Anthony?

There were also two Brady families in the 1901 census for Caherhurley.

  • Cheers Roger. Hadn't thought of the oldest son's name. This is not a convention that we seem to have adopted - more commonly the father's name is used for the firstborn son's middle name. Firstborn was James (1860 - 1929) whilst the youngest son was Michael James (1873 - 1929) and there seems to be a pattern. I'll be chasing up James Brady the older.

    Thanks for your advice.

In my family, my grandfather emigrated to the States and named his first son after his father. However, customs changed and my father named me after him. That seemed to be the practice for second generation children. More recently, it is rare that you have a junior.
