Whilst my Michael Gleeson was born in Ireland around 1807 (guessing) - and married an Ann(e) Tierney also guessing, prior to 1832, their children were born in different parts of Ireland

Mary, about 1832 in Tipperary

Ann 1839 in Ireland

Eliza 1840 in Ennis County Clare

Frances Kathleen 1842 in Ennis County Clare  (I'm told there were son's but I have never found them.

I presume Michael Gleesonn was deceased when the family moved to Australia.  I might add that Michael was a protestant and his wife Ann(e) Tierney.

Ann(e) Snr, Mary, Ann Eliza  and Frances Kathleenn (or Kathleen Frances - I dont know which one is correct, she was my g grandmother), all came out to Australia at various times between 1857 and 1862.    However in Trove - a newspaper advertisement was published "

Miss Alice Gleeson, Ennis, Ireland, will please forward her address to J.C., Kyneton (Victoria)

I know who JC is (James Conway, who married the oldest Gleeson daughter, Mary)

So Alice must belong to the same family of Michael & Ann(e) Gleeson, but I can't find anything about her - birth, her subsequent move to Australia, marriage - death, anything.

I was wondering if someone could help me.   Ideally I would like to find out more about the family in Ireland.

Judy - Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.

Ennis RC parish records are on Roots Ireland, one of only seven parishes for Co. Clare. I looked for Gleeson baptisms 1835-1845 and only found one Gleeson baptism where the father was Michael. This baptism was in1842 and the child was Michael. However, the mothers name was not Ann(e).

I'm wondering if the children were baptized in the local Church of Ireland church. There records go back to the 1700s.Here is the link to the web site for the C of I church in Ennis. You may want to contact them.

I checked the 1855 Griffiths valuation head of household list for Co. Clare. Although there were Michael Gleeson entries, there were none in Drumcliff parish where Ennis is located.

  • Thanks will look up that site.    I forgot to say that Michael Gleeson was a manager of Estates - would that help you at all?

No, estate managers are not shown on records as far as I know.

  • I just thought it would give you a clue.   One of the death certs I have shows him to be a Government Official, and another, Manager of Estates.   What I am getting at is that he sounds very educated, and I wondered if he was in business or something.

The James Conway who married Michael's eldest daughter, was also highly educated, he being a registrar.
