Hello,

My Great grandfather was George Denis Carroll. I know little about him except that he was born about 1853 and his father was Michael Carroll. George joined the British 70th Regiment of Foot in Westmeath on 22 Julk 1870. The following year, the regiment was posted to India and fought in Afghanistan. George left the army in India about 1882 in Dinapore, having married Margaret Frances McLoughlin there in 1881.

He joined the East India Railway and was working for them when he died in 1900.

I would be grateful for any information.

I searced the Roots Ireland indexes for all of Ireland for 1848-1858 and there were eight George Carroll records, however, none had a father named Michael and none of the records were in Co. Westmeath.

I checked the 1854 Griffiths valuation head of household listing for Co. Westmeath. There were seven Michael Carroll records. Possibly one of the seven was your ancestor.
