Greetings to you in County Clare!

My great grandfather was one John William Murphy, born in County Clare in 1846. He emmigrated to South Australia some time before 1875, as he married Anne Guerin in Mount Barker, South Australia on 27 January 1875. He died in Adelaide on 14 February 1918.

John's father was Martin Murphy (1821 - 1857), presumably born and died in Clare. Martin's wife was Ellen Walsh (1821 - 1857).

The above is the total of my knowledge about any of these people. I do not know which Parish they were in.

I am looking for assistance in discovering more information about all the above people, as well as any earlier ancestry that might be discoverable.

Is anyone able to help?

Kind regards

Graeme Warnock

Co. Clare is difficult to do research because there are very few RC parish church records online. Civil registration did not begin until 1864.

The Griffiths Valuation head of household survey was conducted in Co. Clare so assuming Martin Murphy was leasing land at that time then there are four martin Murphy entries in the head of household listing. See link below. This will give you some leads for researching.

The Co. Clare library site is the best place to start  for genealogy research.

As an aside the National Library of Ireland plans to put the RC parish registers online later this summer for free searching. At that time, you could review the registers for the RC parishes which correspond to the civil parishes in the Griffiths records.

  • Hi Graeme:

As well as what Roger has told you, you might look at the Griffith's Valuation for Walsh and see if both names are within the same townland or parish.  That may help to narrow down who you need to look for.  Many times, brides and grooms were neighbours.  Any questions, get back to me.

  • Hi Graeme,

Martin Murphy is my great great grandfather.  My sister has traced our tree back to Martin and Ellen Walsh.  Martin is listed as born in Clare in 1821. Ellen is listed as born in 1821 but only in Ireland. Martin is listed a

s dying 1857 in Angus, South Australia.  Ellen is listed as dying on 13 March 1905 in Brighton S.A.

John Wiiliam was their first child born in Clare in 1846.  Their second was Thadeus born in 1851 in the Bugle ranges in S.A.  So sometime between1846 and 1851 they emigrated to S.A.  Thadeus is my great grandfather.

The chart I have (from my sister) lists John William and Anne Lucy Guerin having three daughters, Ellen, Jane and Mary.  She has traced a few of her desendants.

right now I am in Ireland - and will be in Clare tomorrow. I am not particularly confident of finding any more information.

However, I do live in Adelaide and will be back in a week.I will be happy to send you a copy if you send me your email.  My address is brianmurphy@internode.on.net

Please let me know if you have had any success chasing Marti n.

  • Hi Brian:

Have you been able to find the parish where the Murphys and Walshes came from?  If you like, I can take a look in Tulla for you.  Let me know via email at:  tulla@irelandxo.com.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Greetings to Ireland, and Hi Graeme and Brian,

Well, we must all be cousins..!

I am descended from Martin Murphy born abt 1820 Clare Ireland d.10th July, 1857 Mt Barker, Sth Aust.

and Ellen Walsh, b abt 1814 County Clare, d.13th March 1905 Brighton, Adelaide, Sth Aust. (at the residence of her son Edward).

I have they emmigrated to Australia on board the "Wanderer" departing Plymouth 23rd Jan 1851 and arrived 22nd May, 1851 in Adelaide.  They arrived with a 5 year old son (your ancestor Graeme) - John William Murphy b.abt 1846 County Clare Ireland.  John William died 14th Feb 1918 and is buried at West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, in the old Catholic section with his Grand daughter Betty Ann Hassett (d. 7 weeks old).

Martin Murphy died only 6 years after arriving here in Australia, and I believe Ellen never remarried.  Ellen was very active in the Catholic Church at Mt Barker, and left money to them when she died.  Ellen lived to the ripe old age of 91.

This has been a difficult family to trace the Australian descendants.

There are 2x Martin Murphys who married Ellen Walshs' and they both emmigrated to South Australia.

Our Murphys are the Farmers who settled in the Mt Barker area.

The second Martin and Ellen Murphy family were miners and settled in Jamestown, Sth Australia.  They were from Kilkenny, Ireland.  This Martin Murphy was killed in a tragic accident in the Smelting yards at Wallaroo, Sth Australia.  (Lots of info on trove newspapers if you want to read about the inquest).  I also have the list of descendants of this family, so as to Not confuse them with ours.

A bit of info on OUR Murphys.

Martin and Ellen were married in 1850 at Newtownards, Northern Ireland.

This may have been to secure paperwork to travel to Australia.

By 1850, John William was 4 years old.

I have a gut feeling that they were already married.  Somewhere in Clare, but this is just instinct, not fact.

The descendants I have for Martin and Ellen are

John William Murphy b.abt 1846 Clare, Ireland. d.14th Feb, 1918 Adelaide, Sth Aust. married Anne Lucy Guerin 27th Jan 1875 Mt Barker, Sth Aust.  7 children

Edward Thadeus b.17th Dec 1851.Mt Barker, Sth Aust. d.26 Sep 1923 Brighton, Adelaide, Sth Aust. married Maria Edith Conlin 31st March, 1880. Mt Barker, Sth Aust.  10 children

(Ellen must have been pregnant onboard the Wanderer with Edward Thaddeus).  (arrived May 1851.)

Margaret Ann Murphy b. 5th Nob 1853 Mt Barker, Sth Aust, d. 9 Sept 1912 Strathalbyn, Sth Aust. married Edward Steven Walsh 27th Nove 1871, Mt Barker, Sth Aust.  14 children

Catherine Murphy. b abt 1856   d. 26th Aug 1918 Nhill, Victoria, Australia. Married John Conlin 22nd July 1874. Mt Barker, Sth Australia.  15 children

Martin Murphy Jnr. b18th Jan 1857 d. 25th Sept 1910. Freemantle, Western Australia.  married Ottilia Sophie Matilda Michalk 30th Nov. 1895 Registry office Adelaide, Sth Aust.  1 child.

Martin Murphy Jnr has been a hard one to find.  He changed his name to Robert Martin.  His wife died in childbirth of their only child, and she was taken away from her father to be raised by the Michalk grandparents, Otto and hs wife Ernstine.  Sad.  He lost his wife and his child.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now this is where I come from.

I come down from Edward Thaddeus Murphy, who is a brother to Graeme's John William Murphy.

Brian I believe we are slightly closer cousins than I am to Graeme.  We are 3rd Cousins.

You come down from Edward Thaddeus's son Edward,b 1884 Yanac a Yanacky, Vic, Aust and I come down from Edward Thaddeus's other son Michael Patrick b.1887 Yanac a Yanac, Vic. Aust. Edward and Michael Patrick were brothers.  Michael Patrick, my Pop, was a Sth Aust Mounted Policeman.

Ive had fun the last 20 years tracing Martin and Ellens descendants.  And obviously, I still have alot more to add, as they had so many children, but I always love meeting any potential "new" old family.

Id love to correspond with both of you.  My email is joraeus@hotmail.com

and your both welcome to contact me.  I have some fantastic photos that my wonderful cousin has shared with me.  I think she may be your sister Brian.  Her name starts with E.  She has been absolutely wonderful helping sort out the Martin Murphy Jnr saga.  Many nights on Facebook Messenger swapping info and stories, and new discoveries.  Its all very exciting when you find something.

Well, Im pretty much in the same boat when it come to the Ancestry of Martin and Ellen.  Where did they come from exactly in Clare Ireland??

I am no further afeild than I found a Martin Murphy in 1850 who had his land taken from him.  I think it was Tulla, now that you have mentioned it.  Kilmeaney rings a bell too.  But from memory, I had 4 choices and didnt quite know where to go from there.  1850 would have fitted in with their immigration details and even the marriage before they left.

Ireland Griffiths Valuation 1848-1864 Martin Murphy Ballynacragga Lord Inchiquin, Land.  Also listed is a Timothy Walsh Balllynacragga John McMahon House.

Ireland Griffith Valuation 1848-1864 Martin Murphy Bathfolan Lord Inchiquin, House, Offices and land.

Ireland Griffith Valuation 1848-1864 Martin Murphy Killaloe (Main Street) Alicia Jepson House.

(Killaloe also has Considine's in the same area.)  Also in our tree.

Martin Murphy Lessor Lord Bishop of Killaloe, Location Shantraud, Killaloe, Clare

Martin Murphy Lessor name Maurice O'Connell , Location Lecarrow, North Tulla, Clare.

So as you can see there are not that many Martin Murphy's in Clare Ireland, and Im glad Martin Murphy is not a very common name, but it still leaves us without knowing which is OUR Martin.

If anyone has any suggestions where to go from here, Id be very grateful.

My motto....share the history, or it will get lost with us.

Love to hear from you guys.

    Jo

  • Dear All:

I'm delighted that you are all making contact with one another through this message board as this is what the project is all about!!

I was meant to phone Brian, however, I have had a flu during the week and have not been able to do a lot as a result.  However, I note that there doesn't appear to be a definite parish in Clare and as there are Walshes and Murphys in Tulla, I will have a look in our registers for a John William Murphy born about 1846  to Martin Murphy & Ellen Walsh.

If you are not aware, the National Library in Ireland will be putting all microfilmed parish registers online through their website from the 8th of July.  This may be very helpful to you to try to narrow down the parish.  Their website is:   http://www.nli.ie/.

I will contact you all through this thread if I find anything of interest.

Many thanks for your queries and please be sure to check back as our new website is due to be launched in the next few weeks.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Hello Jo, Jane and Graeme,

I spent this morning in the National Library  looking through the microfische records with no luck.

I searched the baptism records for Tulla for 1851/2 but did not find Martin.  It could be I missed it as they are diffficult to read. It could also be that it is another parish in Tulla.  The woman who was helping said there were 2 parishes.  Next, they may have been born in a different parish altogether.  The woman did say that they hope to get all the records on line in summer - I assume that means July as mentioned. The bad news is that the records from that area are incomplete.

I checked the Tulla cemetry a few days ago, also without luck.

Jo, it is my sister Edith who has done the research and most likely is the person you have been chatting to.

I look forward to putting the pieces together.

    Brian
