Hi
I'm looking for Thomas J. (I think Joseph) Costello (my paternal gg grandfather mother's side) from County Mayo but I do not know which parish he may be from. He was born about 1831 and came to America about 1850. Any potential information would be appreciated. I know there is a Barony of Costello but it doesn't help narrow down where he may be from. He married Honorah (Hanorah) Flynn but I don't know if he married her in the US or in Ireland.
Thanks for any info. Either contact me here or at karen.a.danielsen@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Karen Danielsen, Ph.D.

Karen:
I assume your ancestors were RC. There are very few RC parishes (maybe 6) which have records back to 1831. There were no Thomas Costello baptisms in 1831. There was an 1829 Thomas Costello baptism in the Oughaval Church of Ireland parish. Oughaval is the parish where Westport is located.
I assume this record is not for your ancestor.

Hi Roger
I'm not certain at this point so it could be him. I only have as estimated birth year based on his grave stone in Brooklyn. At least it is a place to start!
Thanks,
Karen Danielsen (n?e Vaughan).

Hi Dr Karen & Dr Roger
The 1861 US Census cited on the Vaughan tree on ancestry has Thomas born 1831 Ireland to parents John & Mary & John born 1815; however he would only have been 16 when Thomas was born!
The only baptism for the above on www.rootsireland.ie/ is:
Unfortunately the site is no longer cooperating so I'll have a look for John in the morning.

Just for future reference the parents of the 1829 Thomas in Oughaval C of I were Thomas and Jane.

I'm afraid there are 62 birth/baptism records for John Costello /e 1805 + - 10 ears on rootsireland but none from Mayo or Offaly.
