My great-grandfather, Anthony Truel was born somewhere in Ireland in 1869 I think he came to the US in 1886 with his parents. He was only 17 when he arrived. He lived in Pittsburgh, Pa. He married Bridget R. Phillips, also born in Ireland. The US 1920 census states that he came in 1901 and that his native tongue was Irish. He may have spoken Gaelic. The 1900 census states that he came to the US in 1886 and married Bridget Connelly the same year but not sure if he married her here or in Ireland.
I am looking for any information about Anthony Truel and where he may have come from in Ireland. We think his family may have been from County Mayo but have no proof.

Judith:
I checked the Griffiths Valuation head of household listings and there were no Truel records in all of Ireland. There were four Truell records and three of the four were on the East Coast so I eliminated them. The other record was near Clifden Co. Galway. There was a Michael Truell in Augrusmore townland in Omey civil parish. (see link below).
I also looked at Roots Ireland and the civil birth index records and could not find a birth/baptismal record for Anthony. There was an 1871 birth record for a Bridget Truel and an 1877 birth record for a Thomas Truel. Both records were in the Clifden registration record so I believe they were from the same family listed in the 1856 Griffiths.
Let me know if you have any questions.

On the 1930 census (Mint way, Pittsburgh as per 1920) both Anthony and Brdget, she's down as Delia, state they were born 'North Ireland'
Their year of immigration is a little different on the 1930 form - they have 1895 for both of them on the 1930 form, compared to 1901 on the 1920 return. They also state on the 1930 form that they married when Bridget was 22 - so c1890 (corrected).
If that marriage detail is correct then I'd start the search with the marriage, or even births of their children - do their children show up in the US on census returns ?

The mention of them speaking Irish and place of birth 'North Ireland', makes me think Co. Donegal. This county still has Gealtacht areas, where they speak Irish, it's in Ulster the northern province in Ireland, but not in present day 'Northern Ireland' i.e. the UK, which only includes six of the nine counties of Ulster...
