Looking for information regarding James Gilpin, born about 1871, maybe in Armagh, but not sure.  When he was 19, he relocated to Connecticut.  He had said he had two brothers, who, at about the same time he sailed to CT they left for ChristChurch New Zealand.  Their names I don't know and have been looking but find it a challenge.  I do not know the names of James' parents either.  James is my great grandfather. I do know his Y-chromosome haplogroup  it is I2a, now referred to as IP37.    pjs

  • pjs,

Familysearch has 3 possible births around 1871. One was registered in Bawnboy (Cavan) in 1870, one on 8.1.1872 in Armagh city (mother?s maiden name Rice), and the last in Banbridge (Co Down, though it?s registration area includes part of Armagh) in 1872.

I suppose if you obtained copies of each of those certificates, that would give you the parents? names. You could then search for siblings. You could also search the 1901 Irish census. There?s 4 James Gilpins listed there born c 1871. Those still in Ireland clearly aren?t the family you are looking for and so could be eliminated. Sounds like a fair bit of work.

Can you get James? parents names from US sources? Eg marriage or death certificate or naturalisation papers? That would help narrow the search.

  • Hi Pamela
The Gilpin tree on ancestry has James Gilpin born 1872 in Armagh with parents William Gilpin & Mary Ann McAlister.
However, given that they spent their lives in Canada and were there the year James was born in Ireland (according to the tree info) these can't be correct!
www.rootsireland.ie/ has a record of James Gilpin's baptism 1872 in Armagh; 18 Jan 1872 (birth 8th Jan). Parish is LOUGHALL Civil Parish; parents John Gilpin (farmer) & Mary Roe. Home address is ANNAGHMORE.
I searched for other children of John & Mary and got Richard 28 Nov 1867.
I went back to ancestry and tried to find Richard coming to N Z. Instead I found a tree which had Joseph Gilpin who was born LURGAN Armagh 1862 died N Z 1949.
His parents Dynes Gilpin & Margaret Ann Lyons.
Back to rootsireland; 3 brothers were born to Dynes Gilpin & Mary MAGINNES: John 1876, William 1877 & Joseph 1881. No James!
I'll let you digest this lot and come back with your thoughts

  • I believe the Gilpins were good friends/relations of the Atkinson family that I am descended from.  My GGG grandfather was Richard Atkinson.  He and his daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth, came out to Otago, NZ in 1864.  Sadly Richard was murdered the following year.  I am one of Margaret's descendants and she married, firstly to a Dickson, then to Robert Cotton. The Gilpins stayed in touch with the family for a long time, and I believe someone was in contact recently. I will explore records here for you if you like. I am in Christchurch.  Will be in touch.  kind regards Kerry.
