Can't find any records either which suggests that likely some of your data may not be correct. I could not locate a marriage record for Thomas and Anne. No civil birth records for a Thomas O'Toole in Castlebar in 1885. Roots Ireland has a Thomas Toole record in 1882 and another Thomas Toole record in 1887 where the father is Thomas. However, the mother's name was not Anne.  I have not checked yet to determine if these records are civil or church.

Are you aware of any siblings.?

Did he come into New York?

In Mayo the surname Toole was a lot more common than O'Toole and the name was most prominent in Kilgeever and Kilcommon parishes.

    Let me know.

  • Roger,

    Thank you for your reply.

I am not aware of any siblings. As a maturer of fact, you now have ALL the information I have.

In 1994 I located his " Declaration of intent" to become a U.S. Citizen. This court document stated he was born the 23 of June 1885 in Castlebar. It also stated he arrived in New York on the shop Hiberian on 11 April1903. His last place of residence was Chester, England and his ship left the port of Liverpool, not far from his last residence.

The Hiberian , I found out,  was decommissioned in 1900.

I have spent endless  HOURS trying to verify any of this information.

Any direction and advice would be greatly appreciated.

OK so that explains why I could not locate him in the 1901 Irish census. I'm going on the theory that he was younger than 17 when he came to America. I will try to get more info on the 1887 birth or baptism record that I located on Roots.

I went back to the Roots Ireland indexes and the 1887 record was a civil record in the Bangor area which is in the northwest party of Mayo. The fathers name was Thomas, however, the mothers name was Kate. I don't think this is a record for your Thomas O'Toole.

  • Hi Tim, The names Toole and Cain I have in my tree as sponsors for some of my family's baptisms.  Popular names around Kilgeever and Louisburgh.  The time period they were sponsors for my Tonra family was in the 1850s.  My family lived in Westport parish so maybe that will help your search.

  • Thanks Tina,

Interestingly fact is my elusive grandfather married a girl form Westport ( Derrygorman) in 1905 in Cleveland,Ohio. Her name was Della (Bridgit) Brown(e). I have always wondered if they possibly knew other in Ireland before coming to America?

He claimed to be from Castlebar and Westport is very close.

I just find it so odd that I have found no records at all under his name. Some have suggested he may have changed his name upon coming to America.

    Tough brick wall.

    Thanks again,

In loving memory of THOMAS O'TOOLE, Lecanvey, died 15th June 1965, aged 64 years.. And his wife
    ANNIE died 1st Jan. 1986.

I know they were born too late to be who you are looking for, but this site might give you a lead.  Many of my family are buried there, including my 2nd great=grandparents.  Hope this helps.
