She married John Dickson aka Dixon approximately 1843.

They had four children Matthew Dixon b 1847

John Dickson was born about 1811 and died before 1870 in Indiana, USA

Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie has an 1819 baptismal record for a Honor (or variant) Gavin in the Kilcummin Oughterard RC chruch records.

I aslo located an 1842 baptismal record in the same church for a Mat Dickson with parents John and Honor. There is also an 1844 baptismal record in the same church for Edward Dickson to the same parents. I did not look for Margaret and Patrick.

I did not locate the marriage record.

I think you know that Roots is a pay site and that you now need a subscription to view their transcriptions.

  • Greetings,

I am happy to advise that thanks to the assistance of this is wonderful web site and the kind researchers I found my family home parish in Galway. My cousins and I are very grateful.

I have questions I hope someone on this site can answer. Between 1810 and 1842 the family changed the spelling of the name Dickson to Dixon?  The USA relatives always thought it was changed during immigration  to the USA however the records indicate it was changes while the family was still in Ireland. Why would this have happened?

The second question is the year of birth for the three children. All three were five years older according to the baptismal records than the records in the USA census indicates. It is hard to believe is was not intentional since all three children had the same issue. Was this common to change a child's year of birth?

Thanks again for all your assistance, we have searched hundreds of records and are so happy to finally have some answers.

  • BRT Warman, It is entirely possible that we share a relative.  I have a Great Great Great Aunt Honour Gavin born in Kilsallagh, Westport, Mayo in 1819.  Seems to have a brother named Michael Gavin, who would have been my Great Great Grandfather.

  • My gggreatmother was Honor Gavin, Date of Baptism July 10, 1819. The baptism record is from Kilcummin Oughterard.   Her parents are listed as Patrick Gavin and Margaret McDonough.

The witnesses are listed as: Thomas Darcy and Bridget Mulloy.    Her address is listed as Maheramore.

Does any of this match up?

    Thanks for contacting me.

    We are happy to assist.

I don't know when the family came to America but if it was around the Civil War, is it possible they wanted the sons to be younger so they would not be sent to war?

Spelling of names in Ireland in the mid-19th century and later was not an exact science. Many families had spelling variances for the names particularly if the parents did not read and write. Sometimes the person taking the information spelled the name the way they heard it and did not clarify the spelling.

  • I am not totally sure.  I would love it if we found a connection.  Unfortunately, I have very little information on this part of my family.  I would be very excited if there were a connection.  My Honor Gavin had a brother Michael. She lived with Michael, an Honor Gavin who was 76, and herself, an Honour Gavin. My Michael Gavin seems to have Married an "Honor" and an Honour lived with them as a "tennent".  Michael and his wife had several children, one of them was my Grandfather, Austin Gavin.

  • If I find out more information on the Gavin family I will advise.  My Honor married John Dickson/Dixon in Ireland around 1841.  They had four children that we know about, Matthew, Edward, Margaret and Patrick.  The family went to the USA around 1864.
