I'm trying to learn more about a Meenaghan family who lived in the townland of Gortmore in Ballinrobe Parish in Mayo County, especially obituaries for those remaining in Ireland. They appear in the 1850s Griffiths and later in the 1901 and 1911 census. Members of the family moved to the US beginning in the 1850 through the 1880s: Niagara County, New York; Mercer County, Pennsylvania; Greene County, Ohio; and Marshall County, Iowa.

Joseph Meenaghan married Mary Marrey and had:

1) Thomas (b. 1841), married Mary Lydon and remained in Gortmore.

2) Michael (b. 1847), moved to Scotland for a couple of years before arriving Iowa.

3) John (b. 1852), moved to Iowa.

4) Bridget (b. 1854) and died 1864.

Joseph is thought to be the son of Patrick or Joseph Meenaghan and Mary Malley. Brothers of Joseph were John (b. 1818) and married Hanora Duffy and went to New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania; Michael (b.1825) went to New York and then Iowa; and Philip (b. 1830) migrated to Scotland and then to Pennsylvania.

I located a 1919 civil death index record for Thomas Meenaghan in the Ballinrobe registration district. (See below).

His wife Mary died between the 1901 and 1911 censuses. I located a civil death index record for a Mary Meenaghan in 1901. However, the death was registered in the first quarter of 1901. The census was taken on March 31st, the last day of the quarter and she was listed as alive. It would appear that the death record could not be for her. However, there are no other Mary Meenaghan death index records between 1901 and 1911.

  • Thanks Roger. I appreciate the quick response. This certainly appears to be him given his birth year. Can you refer me to the location of the civil death index? I would very much like to search it for more potential ancestors.

I use FindMyPast.ie which is a subscription site.

www.familysearch.org which is free site has index records from 1864-1880.

Let me know who you are looking for and when and I can check FindMyPast.

You can also get copies of the civil records for around 4 euros each from the General Register Office. Go to this link https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx
print out the appropriate form, fill out the form to the best you can and add the index record info. Mail the request. You can ask them to e-mail the copy back. A death record will show the date and place of death, cause of death and the name of the informant and sometimes the relationship of the informant to the deceased.

  • Thanks Roger. I have signed up for a free 14-day membership. It's difficult to sort through, but I'm sure there are nuggets to be found. Thanks again.
