My ancestor William Kneafsey married Bridget Ryder (Rider) in York in 1882. William was from Curradrishy. Bridget stated in one census she was from Attymass but her father Bartly seesm to have been from Knockmore in Backs RC Parish (this seems to overlap with 2 civil parished.)

I checked Roots Irerland www.rootsireland.ie They have an 1858 baptismal record for a Bridget Ryder in the Backs/Knockmore RC church records. However, the fathers name was not Bartly but Tom.

I checked the 1856 Griffiths for Co. Mayo and there was a Thomas Ryder in Rinagry townland in Kilbelfad parish. Kilbelfad and Ballynahaglish are the two civil parishes which relate to Knockmore/Backs RC parish.

Possibly this is a different Bridget but I wanted to make you aware of the record.

By the way, there was a Mary Ryder still living in Rinagry in 1901 along with her son in law and daughter.

  • Hi Roger

    Thanks again for your help.

My Bridget Rider's father is definitely Bartholomew (Bartly or Batty) as I have her marriage certificate which gives her father's name as Batty. It is possible this other family of Thomas is related as they come from the same area.

I have a baptism which may be my Bridget for 8 September 1853 (birth 5 Sep 1953) father Batty Ryder and mother Bridget Callaghan in Backs, Mayo: address Tonebeha. This makes her older than she claimed to be in censuses etc in England but the names fit. Witnesses were Peter Ryder and Bridget Gaughan. In the censuses Bridget Ryder (Rider)'s birth place is recorded as Tonybaun or, in another, Attymass (recorded as Abbeymass) which was possibly her husband's home parish.

    Alison.
