My ancestor Patrick Quinn and his wife Ellen (or Elinor) McHale were married in Toomore parish in 1840. I don't know the exact townland they were from. They came to Clitheroe in Lancashire with their older children in about 1852. (On some records Ellen's maiden name is given as Durkin - so this may also be a family name.) Some of the family went on to Fall River Massachussets.

I looked at the 1833-1834 Tithe Applotment listings www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

There were no Quinns in Toomore parish but there were Quinns the neigboring parish of Attymass including in Mullaghawny townland (spelling was Quin) and three Anthony Quinn records which I suspect were the same person.

The only McHale I could find in Toomore parish was Michael McHale in Toomore townland.. See link

  • Hi Roger

Yes the name is often spelled with one n in the records I have.

It is possible that the marriage was in Toomore because this was the parish of Ellen McHale rather than of Patrick Quin/n. Or perhaps they lived in the town of Foxford rather than on the land - in which case I assume they would not have been listed??. John Quin and Ane Quin were witnesses at Patrick and Ellen's marriage - I believe John is his brother as, later in Clitheroe, a neice of Patrick's is staying with them. At her marriage in Clitheroe in 1876, her father is  names as John Quin deceased. Ane could be a sister..

In one of the census returns in Clitheroe, Lancashire Ellen's birthplace is given as Galway, Ireland but later censuses say Mayo. Patrick always has the birthplace: Mayo.

The only occurrence of an Anthony in Patrick and Ellen's descendents is in 1949 - lots of Michaels and Johns and James but it is still possible that this Anthony in the Tithes Applotments is a relative. I will take a look at the other Quins in Attymass.

The eldest son of Patrick and Ellen was Michael so Michael McHale in Toomore townland is a possibility.

I have been confused by Ellen's surname as on the birth certificates for two of her three children born after they arrived in Clitheroe, Lancashire, her maiden name is given as Durkin but for one (the middle of the three) it says McHale. Death records for one daughter in the USA also give her mother's maiden name as McHail. I wonder if Patrick's mother's maiden name was Durkin and he confused things when reporting the births??

Thank you for taking time to look up information for me and so quickly after I posted. Do you live in Mayo? I love Mayo and Galway and get across when I can.
