Trying hard for further information concerning:

Hugh Kane or O'Kane born abt 1847 (Father's name Pat Kane)

married to Ellen McKenna (Father's name Bernard McKenna) on 18 Feb 1970, Magherafelt RG

Hugh is buried in Newbridge cemetery, he died 30 May 1911.

His son Bernard born 2 January 1886 is my grandfather.

Bernard then moved to Scotland but some of the family are believed to have gone to the US.

Thanks for any help.Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.com

I looked at the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Hugh Kane in Ballymaguigan. Not sure if this is the correct family. This Hugh is a little older than someone born in 1847 and he is married to a Catherine not an Ellen. Also this couple had two children and your note implies a larger family. Can you look at these records to see what you think?

Many thanks for your message. No, had a look at your links but this one here from the 1911 census is my great grandfather, as my grandmother (daughter in law) appears on it too:

The name changes from Kane, to Kain then to O'Kane in the records.

My great grandfather's children went either to the US-John, Sarah, Patrick and maybe others while my grandfather Bernard decided to stay in Scotland. It's hard with the records as the name changes and also the records are wrong, eg Mary's birth cert has her down as being born Magherafelt in Co Tyrone.

My mother told me when I was young that the Kane's came to Scotland to go the US, so I imagine they worked a while then saved enough to emigrate. I remember her telling me she had an aunt who visited her in Scotland who had witnessed the earthquake in San Francisco in 1906.

My family would always stay quite silent about the past I think because they'd had such hard times but it does make my job of trying to link the family much harder.

Thank you again for your help.

    Hugh
