HI, We're from Australia.  At present, we're trying to trace anything we can of the family of JOHN & ELIZABETH MULHOLLAND, who at the time of 1901 Census, lived on a farm at 33 Annaghanoon (Waringstown, DOWN) with 6 children including my husband's grandfather, SAMUEL MULHOLLAND. By the 1911 Census, we know that SAMUEL had arrived in Australia (Departing London on 10th December 1909 on the ship OPHIR and landing in Brisbane).  His brother ROBERT also relocated to Australia - not sure when - and a sister went to Canada.

The 2011 Census shows that the family's address was now 48 ANNAGHANOON.....and that there were only 2 siblings living with John and Elizabeth and also a 7 year old Nephew named THOS JAMES J CARDWELL.

We know that SAMUEL MULHOLLAND, our grandfather, was born around 1886.....and we have a name TONGBANE, DOWN as being his birthplace......but not knowing any locations, dont know how this fits.

We are very keen to try to find JOHN MULHOLLAND's family line, as well as that of ELIZABETH's.....how do we find her maiden (family name ) for instance.

We do know that were of the Prostestant faith.

As we will be visiting Ireland we are very keen to see if there are also any living relatives as well.

Any information, any hints as to where to look further would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Warren and Soenaid MULHOLLAND

  • Hi Warren & Soenaid

www.rootsireland.ie/ (charges) has 4 marriage records of John Mulholland + Elizabeth in DOWN 1880 + - 20 years:

    2 are 1864 1 is 1896 & the other 1897

    http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y

Going by their ages on the censuses they would have been born 1854 + - so a marriage in the 1870's would be most likely

Neither Annaghanoon or Warringstown is in the list of parishes for Down which accompany the records on rootsireland

You might try a site nidirect (which charges) but has some John Mulholland marriages

Another option is findmypastireland (also charges)

  • Thanks Col. I have found some more info...I believe John Mulholland was born on 18th Sept 1886. Elizabeth's maiden name was ARMSTRONG ......so we are getting somewhere.
We still cannot find where any of John's children are of those that were still in Ireland.
I also think that one of their children must have died between the 1901- 1911 census dates.
What parish, or area would a death at Warringstown be reported to please?

    Thank you again

  • Thanks again.

Actually, the more I delve into Irish ancestry (we are working on Ancestry.Com.Au.....I'm thinking that

if you were a Catholic - records are held separately......if you were a Protestant......same thing - maybe at this individual churches - and maybe a lot of these were destroyed too).

Are the lists called CIVIL that we only have access to, simply for people who didn't have Church affiliation ???

If so......I'm feeling quite frustrated as there seems a hundred thousand parishes etc and they dont even correspond with "localities....!

    Seems an impossible task!

We dont seem to be able to come up with any definite leads for down the line ancestors at all......and have hit a wall going back as well.

We're paying for Ancestry site but it really only gives us what we have worked out ourselves

    Cheers

  • Hi

I presently live in Annaghanoon and I hope may be of some help. Mulholland's certainly live in a few areas in both Annaghanoon and Magherana townlands.

I am interested in the Armstrong surname you mention as being Elizabeth's maiden name.

My own grandmother was Armstrong of Donaghcloney.

You also mention Tongbane, Down in your notes. This could be Taughblane townland near Magheralin/ Donaghcloney.

  • Hi John, I only know that Mabel's father was Henry Armstrong and his geneology I don't know. I do not believe I mentioned Tongbane, Down but maybe that is where the Armstrong family roots are.

I will provide more once I look into it.
