Patrick McNally was born about 1837 in Dublin (Howth most likely).  He married Hannah/Ann WHITE in

Manchester, England in 1862.  She was born there, the daughter of John & MaryAnn? MURPHY WHITE,

both born in Ireland.  Four children were born to Patrick & Hannah between 1863 & '69.  The family came to USA sometime in 1870 and are on the 1870 census in Salamanca, Catt. Co. NY.  Four more children were born there.  Patrick died in 1892 and is buried there.  I have extensive information on the family in the US.  The surname has been found with various spellings but always as McNally in USA.

I need to find the names of Patrick's parents & knowledge that he was born in Howth.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

  • The place to start would be an English marriage cert for Patrick and Hannah/Ann if you dont already have that, as it should show their father's names and occupations, and also names of witnesses

  • I had a look for possible marriage in Manchester district, and a wider search of Lancashire, but so far not seeing anything promising for that marriage. Do you have a confirmed date or location for this marriage ?

The problem is there are a number of Patrick McNally baptisms (abt 15) in Dublin city and county around the right timeframe just on the RootsIreland and IrishGenealogy websites, and there could be others that were baptised in parishes not listed online, or in parishes where records dont go back far enough. Howth RC records are usually listed as part of the parish of 'Baldoyle Howth and Kinsealy', and transcripts listed as Baldoyle are included on RootsIreland. These do include some McNally baptisms, but think you would need more definite place of birth information or something like father's name from an English marriage cert to confirm, or rule out, any possible baptisms.

I see a number of public trees for this couple, but none have any further clues to the marriage.

Do you have a US death cert for Thomas ?
These often include parents names, can be very useful, provided the informant knew this information.

  • Hi Kay & Shane

    I had a look at the rootsireland Patrick McNally Dublin births/baptisms 1837 + - 5 years & there were 9:

6 are from St Paul's Arran Quay RC & 1 from each of Skerries RC, BALDOYLE RC & Balbriggan RC

    No luck on www.irishgenealogy.ie/

rootsireland charges to view the full record but it MAY have the parents' names.

There are 3 trees on ancestry with the family but none has any more info than you gave Kay

  • I do have  Patrick's death cert. but since he died away from home at work, there is no information on his parents names.

  • Three of the baptisms mentioned have father Patrick, quite common to have a father and son of the same name. These are all north Dublin parishes - the years are 1838, 1839 and 1842. The 1839 baptism has a middle name Nicholas.

None of these seem to be in the Baldoyle/Howth/Sutton RC parish. I'll figure out the parishes for these...

Do you have some clues that suggest Howth as a location for your McNally family within county Dublin ?

  • I have found unverified reports of his birth in Dublin.  Family Search indicates a birth in 1838 in Howth.

I knew most of the McNally children of this family when I was a young child.  The youngest died in 1954.

Her grandchildren don't have the information.  I represent the only other line of descent.

The name is quite common in Ire. and usually given various spellings in England.

  • Those three baptisms are all St. Paul's Arran Quay, Dublin city.

sorry - another question, hoping to to see if I can work anything out on the source of that 1838 Howth reference record you mentioned, to see if we can rule it in, or out, as a possible match to your Patrick, but didn't spot it..do you have the collection name or a link to that  on FamilySearch ?

Pity they missed the English 1871 census... that might have helped..
