  • Sheila:

I located the civil birth index record below for a Morgan Ryan in the Tipperary registration district. (Part of the parish of Grean is in the Tipperary registration district and part is in the Limerick registration district).

If you get a copy of the record from the General Register Office, it will show the townland where they lived. A copy costs around 4 euros.  https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

I assume Morgan emigrated before 1901. Did his parents also leave before 1901?

  • Thank you for such a unexpectedly prompt reply and the link to the certificate site. I have ordered a copy and will see what information it contains. It is interesting that you said that Grean falls half in Limerick Co. and half in Tipperary Co. as I had thought Tipperary featured in his history. I am afraid I don't know exactly when Morgan emigrated. His father Thomas Ryan was apparently baptised around 1853 and was a Brewery Foreman, but beyond that I don't know anything else.

Looks like the copy and paste of the index record did not work on the first message. The index record is below. You need to provide the info to the GRO to speed up the process of getting the record.

Let me clarify about Grean parish. It is entirely in Co. Limerick. Registration districts can cross counties and the Tipperary district includes about 8 parishes in Limerick including most of Grean.

  • The birth cert. shows "Cropayle" as place of birth. Would you agree that this is likely to be an earlier version of (or a misspelling of) "Crossayle" (as listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_townlands_of_County_Tipperary).

Would you know how to locate where this would have been at the time (1875)?

    Thank you in advance.

  • Sheila:

I would agree that the townland is likely Crossayle which is in Donohill civil parish in South Co. Tipperary. This parish borders Grean parish in Limerick. If you have Google Maps, just enter Crossayle and you will get the location. Looks like a couple miles from the Limerick border.
