My ancester Edward Curran immigrated to USA in 1848. In 1890 his will left $100 US dollard to his sister "Mary Dempsy of the town of Green Garden, County of Longford, Ireland." I cannot find any reference to Green Garden. Edward was born in 1813, his brother, Michael, also immigrated in 1848. They both were aboard the famine ship Siddons, leaving Liverpool, England. Thanks.

I dont know of any town that could match 'Green Garden', and there's nothing promising cropping up as a townland or civil parish name either. Is this a hand written or dictated document ?
I'm wondering if it's a mishearing or misreading somewhere along the line.
The best I can come up with is the town of Granard, which is town in East Co. Longford, and the only town in the county beginning with 'Gr'.

Thank you. I haven't had any luck at all and am confused by his will. Unfortunately, it is handwritten and my copy is faint. I guess I will have to return to Brooklyn, NY to view the original once again.

trying an alternative angle ... probably an extreme long shot ....I had a look for deaths for the name of Mary Dempsy/Dempsey on the BMD Index after 1890, and of an age that might possibly be sister to your Edward - assumes of course that this Mary still lived in Co. Lonford when she died etc.....
Three civil registration districts covered the county, Ballymahon*, Granard* and Longford, the first two covered parts of other counties as well as Longford, and the third was based in the the County town also named Longford.
By far the best possible match is this one :
Name Mary Dempsey
Event Type Death
Quarter and Year Jul - Sep 1906
Registration District Longford
Age 84 (est. year of birth 1822)
Volume 3 Page 117Death certs dont include family information except sometimes if the informant is family, so might be difficult to be sure if this is a connection, but if your've feeling lucky it might be worth splashing out €4 for a research cert ..

Similar question was posted to Longford FB group a few months ago. this information was posted in response by one of the members living in the area
Greengardens is an area in the Parish of Rathcline (possibly a townland). It is situated about a mile from the village of Lanesboro, just off the road to Longford.
Hope this helps a little

Green Gardens in near Lanesboro town in the Parish of Rathcline. I haven't been able to find it on any maps but there are several mentions of it in Newspapers (usually death notices)
I think the link posted by TGF above is worth looking into as Barnacor is just outside Lanesboro on the Londford Road

I have a baptismal record for a great-great aunt in Rathcline Parish that lists the town/place for the the family as Greengarden. You might have luck searching the Rathcline parish records. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0177
Best of luck!

B,
The above information appears correct. Green Garden / Greengarden appears to be a sub-denomination of Barnacor Townland in Rathcline Parish, County Longford, Ireland.
As the last link above didn't work for me, try the following link:
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632454#page/56/mode/1up
Baptised 14 February 1868, Catherine, daughter of John Dempsey and Mary Curren, Greengarden
sponsors: Michael Curren and Elleoner Clarke
I also found a link to her parents marriage record:
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632454#page/88/mode/1up
Married 05 February 1856
John Dempsey and Mary Curran
witnesses: Michael Clyens (Clyne) and Anne Curran
