John and Matilda were married in the Clontuskert Church of Ireland church. Since it was a Protestant marriage, there is a civil record. They were married in the Ballinasloe registration district Volume 1 page 591. The civil record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom. You can get a copy from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. If you are interested in a copy let me know and I will forward instructions.

I checked Roots Ireland but could not locate any possible baptismal record of children of John and Matilda.

Thank you for your quick reply. Shortly after their marriage John & Matilda emmigrated to England (Derbyshire) where John Joined the police force and they had 8 children. John died at 44 years and in 1873 Matilda and her 7 surviving children set sail for Australia & New Zealand. I am a great grandson of John & Matilda and have more that 450 other descendants (incl. spouses) accounted for, most in Australia & New Zealand. I was born 1944 and raised in Australia but emigrated to the USA in 1973 and currently live in Florida.

My interest is to find out more about John & Matilda's parents Denis McMahon & Thomas Perry... their spouses and possibly other siblings, and separately will be visiting Balinasloe next month as part of a trip around Ireland ... in the past I have only ever visited Dublin on business, so this will be our first sentimental visit to the church etc.

    Thank you again.

I looked on Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and did not locate a possible marriage for either Denis or Thomas from 1820-1830. ( I just assumed they were married in this period). I also searched the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Galway East and did not locate Denia or Thomas and possibly one or both were deceased in 1856.

I have a great time on your trip.

  • I am trying to track the marriage and ancestry of my great great grandfather, Thomas Perry who married Elizabeth Perry in about 1820. Their children were Edward, William and Matilda. I believe Thomas was a Constable in Galway, possibly Roscommon. Can you help?

  • John Mcmahon and Matilda Perry are my great great great grandparents.

Im in line with John and Matildas son James edward Mcmahon who eventually moved to Australia at one point John was Mayor of Hay a small agricultural town north of Melbourne and married Ellen Louisa Starr

I know a little of 2 of their sons William and Denis, Denis being my great grandfather.

William was one of the first to in list for ww1 in the town of Hay, and was badly wounded in Gallipoli and had to have his arm amputated. Shortly after William's father and mother found out about his wounds, Williams mother Ellen Louisa Starr passed from pneumonia

I'm in line with their son Denis Edward Mcmahon who moved to NZ and married Annie Jacka and had my grandfather Denis Mcmahon
