I am researching my Irish roots. Mary Doherty was my grandmother. I believe that she was born in Dublin in 1863 or 1864 but had cousins or other relations in Arklow some of whom ran a farm nearby. One cousin I believe was called Dolly Doherty who ran a Post Office and store and I also believe that she was related in some way to a family called the O'Donnells. Mary was the daughter of James and Jane(?) Doherty and she married Joseph Gardner in London, England on 6 June 1893. I know that in February 1900 she was living at 14 Morehampton Terrace, Dublin. She died on 9 August 1945 in Thornton Heath, Surrey, England. Does this connect with anyone you know?

  • Dear CECG

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Have you had a look at www.irishgenealogy.ie

This is a free site that will give you access to details from Dublin parish records?  You should be able to locate Mary?s baptism details there.

In relation to Arklow, you could have a look at familysearch.org or rootsireland.ie. The latter is a subscription site so you will have to register and set up an account. The website of the British Postal Museum and Archive is accessible through the link below. You may be able to find out more about your ancestor?s post office position there:

    http://apps.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archon/searches/locresult_details.a…

The 1901 and 1911 Census is also available here and could be useful in your search:

    Best wishes
