I would greatly appreciate any assistance researching my McEvoy/Scanlan families of Kilbegnet, Galway, Ireland.

John McEvoy (AKA: John Patrick McEvoy?) born 28 May 1833 (or 12 Dec 1832), Kilbegnet, Galway, Ireland.  Parents were Felix McEvoy and Ellen Scanlan (Source: Book of Decatur, Macon, Illinois, USA) or Flan McEvoy and Nellie Scanlon (Source: Daughter Catherine's death certificate).  John McEvoy was Roman Catholic.  He immigrated to the USA in about May 1849 with his two cousins (names unknown).

According to his obituary John had three sisters: Mary (Patrick Grady), Catherine (Mathew Farrell) and Bridget (Cooney).  Mary (born: Nov. 1820, Ireland), Catherine (born: Abt. 1827, Ireland) and Bridget (born: ?).  Mary and Catherine moved to the USA.  Bridget stayed in Ireland as did their parents.

Most of the info I have on John McEvoy and his family was from a book about families in the city of Decatur, Illinois as well as US Census records and his obituary.

Thank you in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.

Based on the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household survey, your McEvoys lived in Oughtagh townland in Kilbegnet civil parish. Oughtagh is about 18 kilometers south of the Co. Roscommon town of Castlereagh. See link below. The father was listed as Flan.

RC church records for Kilbegnet parish start in 1836, too late for John and his sisters.

Hope the link below from the Griffiths works for you. Looks like Flan leased about 3 acres+ of land. Also, I found an 1866 death index record for a Flan McEvoy. Not sure this is your ancestor but the Roscommon registration district covered part of Kilbegnet civil parish. The age is an approximation since the informant provided the year of birth and may not have been real accurate. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. If you are interested let me know and I will forward instructions.

    Instructions below. Good luck!

    Roger

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.
