Dear Reaching Out,

we are keen to fnd out more about my great-grandparents John McGrath and Jane Gethings who are thought to have come to England from County Waterford in about 1870.  I have not been able to find any records of them or their marriage in on-line records before this date.

The details I have are:

- John McGrath - b. c. 1841 in Ireland - d. 05/06/1901 London - a Coachman

- Jane McGrath nee Gethings - b. c. 1847 in Ireland - d. 27/10/1897 London.

Their children were:

- Rose b. c. 1869, Ireland

- Mary Jane b. c. 1871, London

- William John b. 22/09/1878 Winkton, Christchurch, Hampshire - my grandfather.

I hope the combination of the McGrath and Gethings names will be fairly unusual.

We'd be very grateful for any clues you may have about where they grew up and were married.

Yours faithfully,

Gregory McGrath

  • Hi Gregory

    There are 124 birth/baptism records for John McGrath 1841 + - 1 year on www.rootsireland.ie/

The news is better for Jane - there are 2: Jane Getthing 1847 Cork & Jane Gittins 1846 Wicklow

It costs to view the full record but it will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names.

It is possible to go through the parishes for a record until you get a match which I did for Jane Getthing 1847 in Cork. She was registered in Cobh R C parish; I then searched for a John McGrath 1841 in the same parish and got one - 1840.

Frustratingly there was no marriage record on rootsireland or  www.irishgenealogy.ie!
