I am searching for details of the family of my convict ancestor John Dower from Waterford.

John and his brother Martin were convicted of "feloniously assaulting and robbing Michael Fitzgerald and Thomas Fitzgerald on 30th December 1819 on the Turnpike road within one mile and a half of this city"..quote from Waterford Summer Assizes City Court, ..Ramsey's Waterford Chronicle 20th July 1820.

John & Martin were transported on the Lord Sidmouth arriving at Port Jackson on 19th Feb 1821.

I have searched Ancestry.com.au for details on John Dower but after he was granted conditional pardon in June1853 I can find no other record of him. Martin seem to have disappeared in the mid 1830's. 

I have found only one public family tree showing parents for John - Father John Dower - Mother Mary Vercoe but there is no evidence shown for this claim. 

I would like to find details of the Dower family, particularly John & Martin's parents and any siblings including birth and/or baptism records.

Any help would be most appreciated.

  • Any idea of where in Waterford?

    From my own poor research, and I stress poor, there were DOWERS in Waterford City and DOWERS in Clashmore/Aglish in the county..

  • Hi,

    Not sure if i'm the same family but y mum's dad's family had dower family in waterford(rockferry) where they owened a small piece of land, my grandad is called john william dower and he spent many years in the cottage in rockferry(waterford) if you think hes related please reply as ive found it evtremely challangening to find hid family in the records....
