Hi,

I've finally traced a branch of my family to a specific location in Ireland: Street Parish! (The records I used have all been purchased first on Scotland's People and now Roots Ireland).

These pieces of information come from Roots Ireland documents:

Baptisim of Edward Galligan:

Edward Galligan, baptised 07-Sep-1835, Streete, Co. Longford, demoniation:RC to parents Patrick Galliganand Brigid MacManus. Father's occupation, not recorded. (Sponsor 1: Charles Galligan, Sponsor 2: Ann Galligan)

Marriage of Patrick Galligan & Brigid MacManus:

04-Feb-1823 , Streete, Co. Longford, Roman Catholic, bachelor and spinster, names of parents not recorded (Witness 1: Michael Gaughney, Witness 2: Brigid Gaughney)

* I found one listing for a Patt Galligan in Street, in the Tithe Applotment Book, but I'm not sure what this information means exactly, and if it's my Patrick Galligan

- I don't have any birth or death information for Patrick or Brigid. Will it be possible to trace them without the names of their parents, or to find the names of their parents?

- I have a record for Edward getting married in Dundee in 1864. I can't tell if it says his parents, Patrick and Brigid, are deceased by this point or not. The record is difficult to read.

- I don't have any information for the years between Edward being baptized in 1835 in Street and getting married in Dundee in 1864. I have all the information for him following his marriage.

- Can the names of the sponsors and witnesses help me find anything?

- Are there cemeteries transcribed online for the area of Street Parish?

Any advice or information would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I have passed your query to some of our volunteers in Longford. I hope they will be in touch soon with some suggestions

    Best wishes

  • Dear Ruth,

Street is a parish that straddles the border between Counties Longford and Westmeath. However, it is clear that your ancestors lived in the Longford part. The tithe applotment book includes the names of those landholders who were liable to pay tithe, a tax to the Church of Ireland. According to a finding aid to the books, there were two Widows Galligan in the townland of Currymore and Currybeg (I have not checked the online version, which I assume you have done). Where was the Patt that you found? The Street book was compiled in 1826.

I note from a guide to a later record, Griffith's Valuation 1854, that there was no Galligan in Curry at that point.

Much work has been done on transcribing gravestone inscriptions in Longford and Westmeath, but I do not know if Street has been included. However, I will try to find out.

The information from rootsIreland comes from the parish registers, as you probably know. You cannot assume too much from the names of witnesses at marriages or baptismal sponsors.

    Best wishes,

    Martin Morris

  • Thank you, Martin.

The information regarding Currymore & Currybeg and names of witnesses was new to me. I also wasn't sure where the information on rootsIreland came from, so thank you.

The additional information that was provided for me by others, or that I found, since my post was the following:

    - 1826, Tithe, Patt Galligan in Corralanna

    - 1854, Griffiths, Thomas Galligan in Milkernagh

    - I purchased two death records, both for a Patrick Galligan, from rootsIreland, and one was a bachelor from Granard. The other was from Rath, Streete parish, in 1855. No other information was recorded, but I thought that he could be a likely match. There is also a Patrick Galligan born in 1800 who died in 1873,.in the civil death index record, that someone kindly found for me, but I have not purchased that.

At this point, I don't expect to get much further back and now I'm looking for related places that I should visit, area photos & historical information to include in my tree printouts.

    Thanks again & Best.

  • Good Morning,
My search for Galligans centers around my great-grandmother Catherine Galligan who married Peter Gooldrick.
A quick glance suggests we may be looking for different branches of the family but I've learned that you never know where your next lead will come from.
There seems to be numerous Galligans in both Longford and Cavan which, while making the search more difficult, also makes it more interesting.
With that in mind I hope the attachment I've tried here works and helps.
If not, feel free to e-mail me at mcgggs@verizon.net and I'll try again.
    Happy and successful searching,
    Bob

  • Thank you, Bob, for both your reply and the new information. Perhaps, our branches will merge into the same branch at some point. I haven't had a chance to do anymore research recently, but I'll reply here if I find anything new. And, I'd be interested, too, if you find out anything interesting about your tree - always fasciniating even if it's not the exact same branch. Best of luck! Cheers, S.
