Hi!

I'm  looking for information on Girvan's in the Coalisland, Cookstown, Drumkern, Ballyclog, County Tyrone area.

Joseph Girvan born 1882 (from Tyrone) who married

Catherine Donnelly born 1876 (From Derry) in 1905

They had at least 5 children:

Thomas Girvan          born: 1907

Mary Anne Girvan      born: 1908

John Joseph Girvan   born: 1909

Patrick Girvan             born: 1911

Lily Girvan ( who married a Skeffington) they had 2 children: Cecil Skeffington and Cyril Skeffington born: 1935 died: 1980

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Cathy :)

Here is the 1911 census record for the family. They lived in Drumkern townland, Ballyclog civil aprish near Cookstown. I also located the civil marriage index record from 1905. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living in 1905. If you want to get a copy, let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Cathy,

Good to hear from you. May I ask where "Pat in America" lived?

I think my greatuncle James Girvan went to Floodwood, St Louis, Minnesota in 1887.

I have attempted to attach a document of Joseph and Patrick birth certs

Joseph Girvan seems to have been from Lenadremna(gh) with father Thomas married to Mary Ann Canavan.

Townland of Drumkern(cairne) is nearby. (see townland map)

  • Hi Jim!

It's great to hear from you again! I got the dates from the 1911 census. I know Patricks should be correct because he is my grandfather and I have many other sources that match that date. The others I am only hoping are accurate.

    Cathy :)

  • John,

From the boat in 1928, Patrick landed in New York. Patrick settled in New Jersey and built his life and family there. He was in the navy so I don't know if he ever went to Minnesota for any reason but I know he vacationed in Florida.

  • Cathy:

Below are instructions for getting copies of records from the General Register Office.

    Roger

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Cathy,

I have a photograph of headstone in Clonoe Graveyard of a Catherine and Joseph Girvan.

John Joseph and Rosaleen are also buried there.

It cannot be uploaded through this site. Do you have an e-mail address to which I can send it.

  • Cathy,

I have attached some details of a Girvan (father Joseph) - Skeffington marriage (1931).

Might your Lily have been an Elizabeth born (1912) to Gervin and Donnelly?

  • Hi Brian!

I was unaware Lily Girvan Skeffington had a son Francis Leo Skeffington. It's so great to hear from you! If there is any information you feel comfortable to share it would be greatly appreciated! My Great Aunt Lily was my only contact in Ireland and I would love to amass as much family history as possible. I hope to hear from you again. Be well!

  • Brian/Cathy,

I am related to Girvans who came from Lenadremna/Back Upper townlands

    My line is John (b 1953) - James (1917-1989) - William (1879-1961) - Bridget (1840-1892) - Thomas (1832 - 1915) (Catherine O,Neill)

Is your line Francis - Lily - Joseph (Catherine) - Thomas (Mary Ann Canavan) - James (Mary Mc Iver)?

Thomas and James may have been brothers 1790s/1800s?

  • Hi!!

My Girvan line is as follows to my knowledge:

    Joseph Girvan & Catherine Donnelly

    Children:

Thomas, Mary Anne, John, Patrick, Lily

Patrick was my grandfather and Lily was my great aunt. I know these facts  to be true because I had the honor and pleasure to have them both in my life. The rest of the information listed came from the 1911 census.

    Cathy :)
