My grandmother was Bridget Gervin, daughter of Jane Gervan and Patrick Gervan.

She lived in Brackaville with her mother Jane who was a widow in 1901 and 1911 census.

She inherited a farm (no. 17 in Shanliss Upper, recorded in Meenagh Valuation Revision Book)

when her mother Jane died 13 August 1911.

She married my grandfather William Girvin (from Stewartstown) in 1913.

They had 3 children. Joseph, Patrick and James.

She died in 10 September 1918, 1 1/2 year after my father was born.

William survived until 11 October 1961.

My father James (14/4/1917) died 22 October 1989.

I think that this may well be the Bridget Gervin, sister of Edward mentioned by Jim Girvan (New Zealand) stoorsooker. I am related to Girvans in Armagh City and have a cousin in Australia.

There was always confusion about the spelling of the name.

John Girvan

  • Jim,

    Thanks for your reply.

I think the Patrick and Bridget you mentioned may be the ones I am looking for. They were married in Stewartstown and Jane's father was James of farm no 17 perhaps.K

Do you have any details of your Patrick Gervin (father) brothers and sisters. There were 5 farms owned by Gervins  (all very close to each other) in Shanliss Upper in 1860s.  There are details of these in  Valuation Revision Books on www.proni.gov.uk website. Also, some Gervin Wills in Wills Calendar section.

I think one of the Gervin/Devlin births was registered by Owen Gervin who lived close by a farm owned by James Gervin (my gg grandfather). Other Gervin farms were Patrick, David and Michael. The maps of the farms can be seen on Irish genealogy website under Griffith's Valuation.

Looking forward to hearing from you and thanking you kindly.

Is mise le meas.   (It's me, with respect.)

  • Jim,

Some birth, marriage and death records for Northern Ireland (6 counties) are now available online at

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk. perhaps you already know. Service started back in April.

You have to register and have at least 1 credit to access database meaningfully.

There is a very useful map of townlands under Features Section.

I left a post in reply to cathyg0527 who was enquiring about Lenadremnagh Girvans.

John Gervin's Will is very interesting in that he is kind to Bridget and William. Have you any details on Charles and Mary Jane Girvan (Hughes)

  • Jim,

Thanks and grateful for all your assistance. I have attached photos of a few Gervin headstones. You may be able to match them to your records.

    Was Owen your Patrick's father?

  • Hello,

This is my first post on this site.

My gr-gr-grandfather was David Gervin/Garvin who was born in 1856 in Donaghenry, Armagh, Tyrone (possibly Mullaghmoyle). His fathers name was also David Gervin (married to Sara Rogers, from Mullaghmoyle) and I believe that he might be the David Gervin listed in Griffiths Valuation in Shanliss Upper in house 10. There are a few other Gervins as well, and I'm assuming they are all brothers or cousins of each other.

David (junior) and his mother Sarah left Ireland for Radcliffe, Lancashire, England sometime before the 1871 English Census. English Census states that they were from Stewartstown. I have no information if David (the father) went to England or if he died in Ireland or England.

I'd appreciate if anyone has heard of this family, or of the Gervin families in the area. I'm still researching and hope to find a link to another family.

    Thank you,
