Looking for family related to Rose McNally who married Owen Woods, The 1901 Census say they lived Residents of a house 9 in Drummahavil (Derrynoose, Armagh). Owen was 70 and Rose 64. They had three children Peter, Patrick and Mary. Peter and Patrick came to USA, Mary stayed behind and married. Would love to find Mary's family. Rose's parents were Michael and Mary. Do you have Mary's year of birth? I looked for a civil marriage index record for a Mary Woods in the Armagh registration district. I found one in 1881 which is below. It lists possible spouse names and this Mary's spouse would be one of the four.

    Roger McDonnell

    First Name Mary
    Last Name Woods
    Year 1881
    Registered Quarter/Year Jan - Mar 1881
    Registration District Armagh
    Volume 1
    Page 85
Potential Spouse Names Peter Slevin, William M'Glone, Peter Slaven, Francis Lappin

The 1881 marriage won't work since she was 12. There were no other marriages before 1901 in the Armagh registration district. There were a number of marriages after 1901 so I looked in the 1901 census to see if I could find her as a single person. There were a few Marys but they were all married and if married then she would have had another surname. Sorry I could not find the record.

  • Roger ... one more question, is there away to look at the 1901 census and know where they lived?  I see they are residents #9 in Drumhavill ... Owen Woods.  BUT how do you know where that is??  Thanks!  Marilyn

I need to give you a little background on the 1901 census. The family was supposed to fill out the form on Sunday night March 31st listing all individuals who were in the house that night. Throughout the month of April, the constables came to each house within a townland to collect the form, check for accuracy and sign the form along with the head of household. The house numbers shown were at random. The first house visited was house 1, second house 2, etc. There were 36 houses in Drumnahavil in 1901 and the Woods house happened to be the 9th house visited. Many times you will see that a family will be lving in house 9 in 1901 but in 1911 they were in house 12. They didn't move, the constables visited the houses in a different order.

You can't look at the 1901 census and know exactly where they lived within the townland.

I went back to the 1864 Griffiths Valuation for Derrynoose parish. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/armagh/derrynoose.htm

There were five Woods entries in the townland including the last record which I presume is the Owen from 1901. You can go to www.askaboutireland.ie and go to the Griffiths Valuation tab. Enter Owen Woods Derrynoose parish Co. Armagh. The third record is Owen Woods from Drumnahavil. He had plot 45 with 14 acres. The last two tabs have maps from the Griffiths and a present day view. Spend some time working with this application and I think it will give you a better feel for where they probably lived.

  • I found a Mary Woods who married Thomas Moan/Mone in 1904 Marilyn.

However the record doesn't have the mother's name, only the Father Owen.

I sent to see if the priest would look the record up.
