Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.comI hope this works as there does not seem to be a forum for what I am asking about.  DNA testing and a document found in the US lead me to believe that my ancestors are probably from the Monaghan area.  I really need help in figuring out any info about them, and the area on the map I am attaching to see if i can find out the name of the area and possible Parishes I should be checking.  I do not know their religion so need to check all parishes for the area.  My 3 x GGF, THomas Mulhern B abt 1818 is reportedly from Monaghan as was his wife Margaret McKinny B abt 1824.  It appears they may have married after coming to the US, but that issue is a bit cloudy as it looks like they may have had a child before their marriage date--OR Margaret put her maiden name on the Census where I found them.  He may have come to US 29 Sep 1847 and she may have come to US 24 July 1845.  I have not been able to 100% determine is these immigration documents are them however.  Their children were Bridget (1846) Thomas (1850) John (1851) and Margaret 1858.  All children appear to be born in New York City area in the US.  I give this info in case someone out there has these people in their lines.

The area on a map provided through DNA testing indicates an area south of the city of Monaghan, so I would like help identifying exactly what this area is called and what parishes I may have to search in.  I would also like to know if there is a history of these names in the area if possible.  The balloon on the map indicates the precise region, but I have not been able to find a map to further identify where this is.

I did find one website once that indicated Mulhern may be from this region.

If anyone can give me any help with this, from identifying name of area and parish to specific information about this family I would sincerely appreciate it.

  • Hi, Joyce,

The Tithe Applotments for Co. Monaghan show the following Mulherns in 1826:

MulhernPeter Elvey, Errigle Trough, Monaghan, 1826

MulhernPeter Moys, Errigle Trough, Monaghan, 1826

There is one McKiney, but there are also a McKindley, McKinley and a few McKinnas that shouldn't be ignored:

    MckineyBryan Drumdrina, Donaghmoyne, Monaghan1823

    MckindleyEdd,Caddagh,Dromore,Tullycorbet,Monaghan1834

    MckinnaCatherine,Drummully,Donagh,Monaghan1826

There are still Mulherns in 1901 census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/).  The family was RC.

  • Interesting, the first page with Patt also has many McKenna's in Aghaderrey Otra.  Problem is how to figure out if these people are related and where to go from here...Ireland has me SO mind boggled :-)  Joyce

  • The area where your bubble is located is either in the parish of Monaghan or the neighbouring one of Tullycorbet. Monaghan?s RC parish records start in 1835, Tullycorbet?s don?t start till 1862.

  • Thank you.  After a few hours with ancesrty.com I found out they just place the bubbles in the area your family tree says, and I am not 100% sure that the Thomas I located who said this area is where his parents were from is "My" Thomas...so I am back to "digging in the dark" but I did find it interesting that the first census page I looked at showed both Mulhern and McKenna families...I am not happy with ancestry.com as their map regarding where people are from is quite misleading...It turns out that because I have one ancestor who may be from Dublin, and other entries just say Ireland, the computer just selected a spot halfway between Dublin and the center of Ireland...so much for the DNA maps helping me...

I did read somewhere that Mulhern was a common name in this area but cannot find where I read that now...more looking under rocks for my 3 Irish lines I am afraid...but at least the Mulhern info I have could be correct...

Irish are so difficult to find, esp when you are in the US, and don't know anything about the country.

Thanks so much for your help...hopefully this is the once branch that I may be able to really trace, but that depends on whether my NYC info is correct or not  :-(

  • I see that you have Thomas Mulhern (Mulheron) possibly on the ship Memphis on 29 Sep 1847.  Also on the same ship is Mary Mulheron, age 20, Bidey, age 17, and an infant, Pat.  Perhaps not your Thomas.

I noticed on the 1850 census in other families on the page (and other pages), where there appear to be other couples with children, the woman is listed by a different surname....most likely her maiden name.  So, I think it's safe to assume McKinny is the correct surname for Margaret.  Don't you wish all the censuses were like that!

  • Thanks I did not pick up on that re Thomas, so easy to overlook details and 2nd pair of eyes is great!!! ...I will have to revisit him...the name Thomas Mulhern is a tough nut to crack in NYC...Yes the find of Margaret's first name was great...makes me wonder if they had been married and she just misunderstood what they were asking OR if they had first child out of wedlock--I find it unusual for the times that they would admit that...I guess only they know, and they are not talking LOL Thank you------------ Joyce
