My great uncle Moses James Lennon from Lurgan travelled from the New York to Liverpool in 1902 then 1908. He used the name Moses James on his frst trip, he went on to be known as James lennon while living in the USA.

James first arrived in the USA in Dec 1902 under the name of Moses James lennon. He was single at the time. He went to Minneapolis's to join his cousin.

I am also trying to find details of his daughter who was recorded with James Lennon on the return to the USA ships manifest going to NY in Oct 1908. She is recorded as Jerrima Lennon aged 11.

I have no other record of Jerrima apart from this manifest into New York for 1908

I believe Moses James Lennon was born on 21 jan 1867 maybe the ship manifest is not correct or maybe some one was telling porkies?

I wrote to the Minnesota History group who were able to trace my great uncle working as a mechanic so this all ties in.

We then find find James on a returning journey to the USA in 1908 with his daughter Jerrima Lennon.

  • This looks as though it might be Moses in 1901, with his widowed mother and siblings. He was single:

    Same household in 1911:

The name Jerrima is not really known in Ireland. I suspect it was probably Jemima. Can?t see a birth for her though. May have been registered under the mother?s name, and the father?s name would not routinely appear (unless he was present and acknowledged paternity).

  • Sarah:

I found this 1901 census record for Moses James Lennon in Derrytagh North townland, Montiaghs civil parish. The census record shows he was not married. I could not find a Jerrima Lennon.

  • There?s a probate file held in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast for an Arthur Lennon who died intestate in 1931. I suspect that might be Moses? brother. The executor was his brother Thomas. Here?s the abstract (summary):

Lennon Arthur of Derrytagh North Lurgan county Armagh labourer died 16 August 1931 Administration Belfast 10 September to Thomas Lennon farmer. Effects ?1.

  • Hi Sarah, I have found a Minnie V Lennon who married a Scott NIlson in Cook County Illinois on May 11 1942.  This is per ancestry.com. As well, looks like Thomas applied for probate for his brother Moses in August 2 1940.  He did not mention anthing regarding Jerrima.

  • Thank you Roger yes thats my Moses. I am interest in Moses as he was rumoured to have left his daughter but to my delight I found him taking his little girl back to the USA so that makes him a hero.

I have no idea where she was born or who her mother was. The strange thing is she was recored as US citizen on her trip to the USA. Would that have been done in advance? I have so many questions about them.

Maybe I should look at the cousins that he joined with in Minnisota, maybe theres a link.

Thank you for your link for my great grandparents marriage they were Patrick Lennon and Isabella McDowell (various spellings) I have already wrote for a copy of the details. I will keep you up dated.

  • Thank you very much for the link it's so exciting finding details of my great granny and her family.

My grandad was Patrick Lennon born C1874 and he would have been married at the time to his first wife who was Mary Kearns she died in C1909. Can you help me find them on the census please.

  • Thank you, it is very difficult to be sure as there were so many Lennons living in the area. Those names are on my list I will now check the dates. This is another interesting link.

Isabella Lennon would have been the head of the house hold in 1909 census, would there be a record of who the farm passed to after her death?

  • Thank you for your reply, Moses death might have been recorded as James Lennon as when he was in the USA he used the name James Lennon. I believe he died in 1916.

Maybe Jerrima was a spelling error on the ships manifest. Maybe she was called Jimima. When Jerrima arrived in the USA she was 11, would she have had to attend school in the USA? She was born in C1897.

There seems to be too many Lennons! LOL

  • Patrick Lennon didn?t marry Mary Kearns till 1903 so they won?t appear in the 1901 census, nor in the 1911 if she died c1909. (Their marriage was registered in Lurgan Jul ? Sept 1903 Vol 1, page 995).

  • Hello Sarah,

I suspect your great uncle may be my great grandfather. My grandmother (Moses James's daughter) was born just after he left for America in 1902. Moses wasn't married to her mother and he did desert them. They were left behind in Ireland. This information has only recently come to light in our family as older members have opened up about it. I have no information about 'Jerrima'. My grandmother was around 4 years old when Moses made his second trip to America. I wonder if there is a way for us to connect? It would be fascinating to share information with you.
