I am trying to trace my father's Irish roots. His full name was Michael John O'Hara and he always said that he came from the Waterford area. He never had any family that our family new of, so I have very little to go on. His birth date was given as 12th Feb 1917. I have reason to beleive that this may not be too accurate. He landed up in South Africa where he met my mother in the mid 1950's when they married and started a family together. He passed away in 1985.

I looked at civil birth index records for Michael O'Hara in Co. Waterford. Only one record came up and coincidentally it was for a Michael John O'Hara who was born in the Jan.-March quarter in 1924. Possibly this is your grandfather? You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. I included instructions below the index record.

    Roger McDonnell

    First Name Michael John
    Last Name O'Hara
    Year 1924
    Registered Quarter/Year Jan - Mar 1924
    Registration District Dungarvan
    Volume 4

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.
