My great grandparents were Patrick Lennon & Isabella McDowell her name appears as various spellings. They married on 23 Nov 1864 at Derrymacash RC church. My Grandfather was their son he was Patrick Lennon I believe he was born 3 May 1874.

I would be very greatful for any other details relating to Patrick or Isabella or their children. I would love to confirm their parents or any siblings or children. Thank you for your help.

The civil marriage index records show that Patrick and Isabella were married in 1864 rather than 1874 (see index record below). You can get a copy of the marriage record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The marriage record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living in 1864. Instructions for getting a copy of the record are below the index record.

    Potential Spouse Names  Isabella M'Dowell

Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event, registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Sorry for the delay in my reply for some reason I have been locked out of my account but thankfully I am fine now. Thank you so much for this lead. I have rang the Dublin office and I am posting my request letter today. I am so excited at the thought of finding out more about my Family tree. My late father didn't say too much about his family tree his parent died when he was a young man. He did enjoy learning the little I found. Thanks again.

  • I did send my application letter to the G R office with 4 euro attached but I haven't as yet had a reply. It has been a long time so Im not holding out much hope. I might try to ask one of the family to get me a copy of the marriage cert. Thanks for the idea.

  • Hi Roger

I have just posted a reminder to the GRO. I now realize that I didn't fill in the form but I send all the details that you gave me. Maybe that was my failure. Fingers crossed.

The GRO clearly lost or misplaced your request. Hopefully, they get back to you.

  • I have learned that Patrick Lennons father was Thomas Lennon I was also hoping to learn Patricks mothers name however this was not on the copy. I am not sure of Patricks birth date only the date of his marriage to Isabella McDowell on 23 Nov 1864 and Patrick was 21 years old on the day of his marriage, Isabella was 25. Patrick and his wife were both weavers and both the fathers were local farmers from the same parish. Can you suggerst how I might find out who Patricks mother was?  I have a number of photo's of head stones from the grave yard of their parish which has help put some of the families into the right groups.

I searched Roots Ireland indexes www.rootsireland.ie  and located an 1840 marriage for a Thomas Lennon and his spouse Margaret. (I could not determine her maiden name.) This record was in the Seagoe RC church records. I think Seagoe and Derrymacash are the same parish. See this link.

Roots is a pay site and they now require you to obtain a subscription to view their transcriptions of church records.
