has anyone gotten information from the parish priest?  i have sent email and letters by mail and not gotten a response.my gallaghers are from strabane bog a group of houses called long row.  my grandfather had six siblings that i have civil birth records for.  two were baptised at leckpatrick, grandfather was baptized at camus.  trying to see if any of the siblings were baptized at dongahedy but the parish priest has not responded to inquiries.

any suggestions on how to check baptismal records at dongahedy would be appreciated.  i feel there are siblings pre civil record and camus and leckpatrick produced only the three above.

thanks

  • Joe,

Many parishes get rather more genealogical enquiries than they can cope with, and simply don?t have the resources to answer them. For Donagheady & Leckpatrick, there?s a copy of some of the RC parish records in PRONI, in Belfast, as follows:

    Donagheady: Baptisms, 1854-80; marriages, 1857/8-1859, 1862-3; deaths, 1857-9.

For Leckpatrick: Baptisms, 1863-81; marriages, 1863-84.

As far as I am aware, there aren?t any records earlier than these dates. For later dates you would need to go to see the pp. If you ring up and make an appointment, you may get slightly more co-operation, but bear in mind their time is important and try to keep the visit as short as possible. (The priest has to remain present to supervise in case of any damage to the records). A donation to parish funds often helps.

  • Thanks for the speedy reply Elwyn. the births i have civil records for range from 1864-1878 and i believe their might be one or two more btwn 1858-1864. my Ggrandfather's marriage could have been in that 1857-59 range. so i am right in the ballpark as far as the dates go.  my problem is i am in the united states and visiting PRONI or ringing up the PP would be difficult.  Ms amanda cairns administrator at camus and Ms rita devine parish secretary of leckpatrick were both eager to assist in searching and when i offered a donation they both responded none was necessary and it was their pleasure to provide the service.  ms devine was the one who provided me with father mcdevitt's contact information (dongahedy).

i found my grandfathers birth record (1870)  from proni in 1989 contacted leckpatrick for record of baptism, found none.  did find record of baptism for a sister anne (1873) then got her civil birth record from proni 1990.  everything done by post.  then 2012 decided to check ancestry dot com and family search.org as most records now digitized found three older brothers 1864, 1866, and 1868, and two more younger sisters 1876, and 1878.  plus a death recordin US of an older sister born before civil registration started.  on a whim a few months ago i figured on looking for records of baptism in the closest parishes to leckpatrick.  i contacted camus and sure enough i found record of baptism for my grandfather.  so even though the civil birth record lists leckpatrick as parish of birth.  baptism took place in camus to the south. my grandfathers was the only record found.

my thinking is that my Ggrandmother was from Dongahedy got married there and possibly baptized her early children there.  and that there may have been another family member in the city of strabane and my grandfather got baptized at camus.

since i cant get to proni or the PP right now do you know of any websites that have dongahedy's records.  or if i cant wait until i travel there will i have to hire a geneologist to locate the information.

    any assistance would be appreciated.

    thanks again

  • Joe,

I don?t know of any site with Donagheady RC?s records. Rootsireland have many parishes in Tyrone, but not that one (according to their site anyway). Sounds like you need a researcher in Belfast., if the pp won?t assist.

  • have been on rootsireland (great site) and have gotten hundreds of records from ballinascreen in derry, only two from leckpartick and none from camus or dongahedy. dont some parishes want their old records made public? that is ashame.

i think i will contact Ms devine from leckpatrick and see if maybe leckpatrick will contact dongahedy on my behalf.  also i am a member of a gallagher clan website maybe another member will be able to do proni or dongahedy.  or on the other hand i could/should plan a vacation and do my own searching.

    thanks again appreciate the help/advice
