I am trying to trace my family history in Ireland. My great grandfather came to Australia in 1868. Australian Marriage and Death Records show he was born in Graig, Cork around 1844. His father was John Kennedy (farmer) and his mother was Catherine Keys. I have not been sucessful in obtaining any Irish records relating to Arthur or Catherine online.

  • Hello Michael,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and found a baptismal record for JOhn Kennedy, father Arthur Kennedy, mother Catherine Keys, in the parish of Kildorrery RC Co. Cork in 1843.

I also found the marriage record for Arthur and Catherine in the same parish in 1842.

You will have to register with this site (free) and pay about €5 to view and print the baptismal record.  the marriage record will hopefully yield Arthur and Catherine's fathers' names.

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

Many thanks. I found the marriage certificate and four baptism certificates for their children John, Margaret, Johanna & Arthur.

I have not had any luck however in finding the death certificate of either Arthur & Catherine nor any records of marriage or death certificate for Margaret, Johanna or Arthur.

    regards

  • Hello Michael,

As you probably know civil records only began in Ireland in 1864 so if Arthur died after this time there may be a civil record of his death.  You would need to contact the general register office at www.groireland.ie to apply for his death certificate.  You will need an approximate year of death for them to perform the search.

Have you any idea of when he died?  Is it possible that the other siblings also emigrated?  It will be most difficult to find John's brother and sisters.  You would need to know who they married in order to search for a marriage record, and as you don't have that information on the girls then you can't search for their death records.

The sites that I use most (if it helps you in any way) are...www.rootsireland.ie   www.irishgenealogy.ie   www.familysearch.org   www.ellisisland.org   www.castlegarden.org  www.askaboutireland.ie   www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie

    Kind regards,

    anne
