Hi all, I am new to this site so please bear with me. I have scant knowledge of my GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER, PATRICK MELIA or his wife JULIA MELIA other than the fact that they were both born in 1820 approx in County Mayo. I am not sure when they married but I do know they had at least one son, MICHAEL MELIA who was born approx 1844 and he went on to marry MARY SANDERS in Liverpool in 1862. The name SANDERS has also been known to have been spelt SAUNDERS! I have the marriage certificate of Michael and Mary so I know this!
The name MELIA has been spelt a variety of different ways in the little research I have done. It has been spelt MEALIA. MALLY, MAILLE and, of course, MELIA which makes my quest more difficult to find their baptism certificates and the marriage certificate of PATRICK and JULIA.
I am, of course, prepared to make a reasonable donation to the organisation who can assist me to trace my roots as I believe their is no such thing as a free lunch!!

Hello Ciaran,
The surname Melia is really unusual. I don't remember ever hearing of it before.
I went to www.rootsireland.ie and searched for a baptismal record for Michael.
I found one record for a Michael Melia, father Patrick Melia baptised 1843 in Co. Leitrim
I think this record may be worth a look to see what information it may contain. would cost approx €5 or so.
Hopefully you'll get some informtion on the parents and see where that takes you.
Please remember to keep a very open mind regarding dates of birth and cast your net wide in your searches.
Hope this helps some,
Kind regards,

Ciaran,
I went to www.askaboutireland.ie and searched the Griffith Valuations. I found that there were a number of families Melia in Co. Mayo during the mid 19th century. There were aslo a number of Melia families in Leitrim also.
Have a look yourself. Just put in the surname and county and hit search. Make sure to click on all the icons to glean as much information as is possible.
Kind regards,

Hi Ciaran, we share the same g g grandparents namely Patrick and Julia Melia, whose son, Michael Melia married Mary (Sanders/Saunders), and they are my g grandparents. Their 7th child Ellen is my grandmother. I will be visiting the records office at Westport, County Mayo some time next week (w/c 28th April 2014). If you have any further information that might help, e.g., dates of birth, parishes etc, perhaps you could contact me and maybe I could help with the search.
Regards,
Gillian

Interesting to find this thread!
My gt Grandmother Mary Lawrenson was the daughter of Harry Lawrenson and Mary Melia.
Mary Melia born in Liverpool was the daughter of Michael Melia and Mary Saunders.
To find out more of the families roots in Co Mayo is of interest
