Seeking any details or information on the family of Daniel Griffin. I have learned that his wife was named Honora (called Nora or Lenora) and had rumored maiden name of Cotter.

Children born in Trieneragh were Thomas (b. 1847), twins? Jeremiah (b. 1849) and Michael (b. 1849), William (b. 1851), Daniel (b.1856), Honora (b.1858), John Cotter (b.1860), and Mary (b.1867).

A family rumor says that an orphan named Bridget (maybe born with surname Jones around 1851) was adopted into the Griffin family, and later married a Michael, one of the sons. This particular branch of the family leads to me!

I would love to gain any details about this family whatsoever. Thank you for your time and any help you might provide.

  • Hello Amy,

Have you looked at the site www.irishgenealogy.ie  .  this is a free site containing most of the baptismal records for Co. Kerry.   Unfortunately the site doesn't give the option of a plus or minus year range so you will have to manually go through the years yourself.

When you are searching please keep a very open mind regarding dates that you have found on census or tombstones as these are invariably incorrect.  So cast your net wide.

Most people who emigrated were illiterate and undocumented.  They didn't know how to spell their names and hadn't a clue as to what age they were.  At the port of arrival their names were recorded phonetically, their ages were only guessed, and this is the information that followed them for the rest of their lives

The proof of this occured in 1909 when the old age pension was introduced into ireland.  People had to prove their ages and were forced to go through baptismal records to establish when they were born.  That is why there is such HUGE discrepancies between ages in the 1901 census and the 1911 census of Ireland.  Dates were found to be out by many many years in some cases.

The surname Griffen is quite common in Kerry so you will need a good strong cup of coffee to keep you going.

Let me know how it goes,

    Kind regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Hi Amy,

Further to your post 6 years ago, in the last week I have discovered my husband's own link with the Griffin family of Trieneragh as follows:

As Brendan mentioned, Jerry married Ellen Connor 6.2.1872. Their fathers are listed as John Griffin & Denis Connor but that's all I know from their past; I don't currently know of a Daniel Griffin unless there were two Griffin families, both with a son called Jeremiah in Trieneragh.  I'd be interested to know how Brendan found the name Horan please as I'm just a novice at this and it would help me work backwards.

The Jeremiah & Ellen Griffin above had a daugher Honora 21.2.1881 in Trieneragh who married Patrick Lynch of Behins 22.11.1902. They went on to have a large family and all but 2 of their children were born in Trieneragh.

If you think there's a connection with your Griffins of Trieneragh do please get in touch.

    Kind regards

    Jacqueline
