My great great grandfather, Patrick Dooley, married Mary Robins at York, England on 7th July 1863. Patrick gave his age at that time as 23 years and his father as James, a labourer.

In all the censuses, Patrick gave his birthplace as Galway, Ireland.

In the 1861 census, Patrick was living in York with two brothers, John and James, and a sister, Bridget. Their ages at that time were 24, 20 and 26 respectively. Patrick was 22 years old at that time according to the census.

From 1871 until his death in 1912 (aged 74, according to his death certificate) he lived in the village of Wheldrake, near York.

Please can anyone help me trace the Dooleys before they came to England.

I checked Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie for a Patrick Dooley born 1835-1845 with a father named James in Galway East and got no replies. I also checked Galway West and there were 3. However, I noticed you showed Tynagh as a parish and since Tynagh is in Galway East, I assume the records below are not pertinent. Roots is a pay site to view the records.

  • Hi Roger,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have concentrated on Tynagh as it is one of the only two clues that I have for the location of my Galway ancestors.

I found a marriage of Nicholas Robins/Robbins at Tynagh in 1827. I believe Nicholas was the father of  Patrick Dooley's wife Mary.

The only other clue is from Mary's brother Martin who, in the English census of 1891 gave his birthplace as Holly Hill, Galway.

  • Hii Clive,

I come from the parish of Tynagh but now live in Galway City.  Holly Hill is not in the parish of Tynagh.  It is very close to Gurtymadden and may be in the parish of Mullagh. When looking for information on my own family, I came across the name Dooley in the 190/1911 census living in Reaghan, Tynagh (my village). Hope this is of some help.

    Kitty
