Tristram PATTON, middle brother of William (eldest) and Robert, emigrated from Ulster somewhere in the vicinity of 1771-1777. He lived first in Philadelphia, finally making his home in what would become West Virginia where he died in 1843. His birth date varies, according to the source, from 1744 to 1764. One source gives his mother's name as Ann Eliza SIMPSON.
Tristram is said to have had cousins, Robert and Tristram (“Trussy”) PATTON who settled in the same area of Virginia, Robert in about 1805 with his wife Jean (one source gives her maiden name as RAMSEY) and several children. We believe “Trussy” to be one of Robert’s offspring. Ca. 15 August 1793 is the date given by one source for the birth of Trussy and 24 August 1885 for his death in West Virginia. This Trussy is said to have been left 200 pounds sterling by James RAMSAY of Waterford, Ireland.
William, another child of this cousin Robert, is said to have been born in Londonderry in 1778. Robert, the father of William and Trussy, was born in County Donegal. The same source gives him a death date in Virginia of 1823.
Since September, 2011, we have done much research, including two reports commissioned from the Ulster Historical Foundations, to try to track down our illusive ancestor Tristram PATTON. The best we have been able to come up with is that our ancestor's family may have been from Aghanloo or elsewhere in the Limavady area (or in Urney, Camus, or Ardstraw parish in Co. Tyrone).
If anyone has any information on the PATTONs of the area near Limavady (Aganloo, Drumachose, Tamlagt Finlagan), please let us know. We haven't yet given up hope!

  • Thank you for posting all the information on Tristram Patton, he is my ancestor too, we come from the William Madison Patton line.  I have a couple of leads to share with you.  First there is a will index in Ireland of Pre-1858 wills, unfortunately the actual wills were destroyed but there is at least a listing of what wills were filed.  William Patton of Culmore (Londonderry, Newtown Limavady area) is listed as having a will dated 1842.  I am pretty certain that this William is the brother of Tristram.  The death time and place fit.

Second, I ordered some documents from PRONI last year that are letters written from the William Patton above to his cousin Robert Tennent of Belfast.  Robert Tennent's mother was a Patton.

I have never been able to find mention of Tristram Patton anywhere...not in the letters I have or in any records.  Today I found a record held by PRONI of a John Patton and Robert Patton, both from Culmore in 1773 settling some debts in Ireland.  I am wondering if John Patton might be Tristram Patton and he changed his name sometime after coming to America, or maybe it was his middle name.  I am going to request those records from PRONI.

Last with regards to Tristram's mother being Ann Eliza Simpson, do you have a source for that information?  Tristram had so many kids and appears to have followed the Irish or Scottish naming structure-- i.e. First son is named after the father's father, second son is named after the mother's father, first daughter after the mother's mother and second daughter after the father's mother.  This pattern holds on Tristrams wife's side his first daughter and second son are named after his in-laws.  So I think Tristram's father and mother are William Patton and Elizabeth Simpson (Ann Eliza).

Please let me know if you have further information!  What an elusive ancestor!!

  • Hello, Penny, and thanks very much for your posting. If you contact me privately (linda_reverchon(at)telus.net), I can send you a copy of the article that was printed in the journal of the Irish Genealogical Society International which summarizes the several years worth of research a cousin and I did. The article will answer some of your questions.
