I am looking for any information on the Kennedys. My great grandfather, Anthony Kennedy, was born in 1845 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1883. He was married to Mary Reilly who was from Kilmore Parish and Belmullet. I also think Anthony was from the same region. Their oldest son is my grandfather, Martin Henry Kennedy, born in 1875. I am trying to find his birth certificate. I am coming to Co. Mayo in 2014.

Hi Jane
The closest match for Anthony Kennedy born 1845 on www.rootsireland.ie/ is 1846 Sligo.
There is also a record of the marriage of Anthony Kennedy to Mary Reilly in Mayo 1873; the parish is Kilmore Erris R C.
You need to purchase credit to view the full record but it will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names. They have 40% off at the moment.
There are 63 birth/baptism records of Mary Reilly in Mayo 1850 + - 6 years!
There is a record of the birth of Martin KInnedy (yes Kinnedy) 1875 with parents Anthony Kennedy and Mary Reilly.

Hi Jane
This is a good website for researching families in North Mayo
There are quite a few Kennedy burials listed if you use the "search" facility

Hi Jane,
There was no requirement for Civil records of Births & Marriages prior to 1860 so I doubt very much if there is any birth certificate for Anthony Kennedy. Also the Parish records for Kilmore Erris only start in 1860.
As you mentioned Anthony & Mary emigrated in 1883 I looked up a website on the Blacksod Sailings which fortunately became available online just last year. Anthony is listed with his family sailing on the S.S Austrian on 25th May 1883 to Boston. The family are listed as being from the townland of Cross, Binghamstown with their final destination being Baldwin, Wisconson.
There were only 3 families of Kennedy in the 1911 Census living in and near to Cross. There are 2 families in the area of Cross and Drum today. My cousin is married to a descendent of the Kennedy's of Cross so If like I will inform her of your visit this year. She may wish to email you directly.

Jane,
http://www.blacksodbayemigration.ie/ is the website for the Sailings from Blacksod from 1883. There is a map now too of the townland but it is Cross Boyd you need to look at also Rinanagh and these are in the Grey section and not the pink section.

Caitlin,
Thank you so much for getting this information for me. I have been struggling to find the information on when my family emigrated to the U.S., what city they arrived in and the name of the ship. I have the Census records from Erin Prairie, Wisconsin which lists Anthony and Martin Kennedy, my great grandfather and grandfather, respectively. But it looks like Anthony's wife, Mary Reilly Kennedy, did not arrive in Wisconsin. In 1900, it shows Anthony as a widower. Then it looks like Anthony has about four more children once he settles in Wisconsin, but again, no wife is listed on the census in either 1910 or 1920. I have more research to do, obviously.
Please give my email address to your cousin. I would very much like to connect with my Kennedy relatives in Ireland. 7-j@msn.com.
Again, thank you so much.-- Jane

Jane,
I have passed on your information to my cousin's wife and I'm sure you will hear from her very soon. As regards research on the Reilly's it might be a good idea to contact the folks at www.turassiar.com or email them at turas.siar@yahoo.ie. They have loads of information on the geneology of the Mullet Penninsula.
I'm sorry to read that Mary had died before 1900. It was a terrible shame and very hard on the family.
I wish you luck with your research.

Caitlin,
I am sorry that I did not see your earlier post about contacting people at www.turassiar.com. Since I last wrote, I have learned of the actual birth year of Mary Reilly who is buried about one hour from where I live. When the snow melts I will visit her grave site.
You have been an incredible help to me as has your cousin Mary Kennedy Carolan. Thank you so much.
