Searching for information regarding John Carroll and (Sarah?) Jane McDonnell.   Move to USA, Philadelphia, PA, perhaps in the 1920s up to 1930.   Had a son named Thomas (1931) and a daughter named Mary.

We believe they came from around Carn, Charlestown, Mayo.   Looking for the Parish name for this site.

Thanks.

Regards,

Tom Carroll

The parish is Kilbeagh although today it is probably called Charlestown/Carracastle parish. My grandfather emigrated from the east part of Kilbeagh parish and went to Philadelphia in 1907.

Here is the 1911 census for your family. Looks like her name was Susan Jane. Let me know if you need more information.

I have a detailed map of the area. Carn townland is about 5 miles southwest of the town of Charlestown and about two miles northwest of Knock International Airport.

  • Roger,

Thanks for the quick reply.  Yes, I believe that's a match for my great grandmother and aunt on the McDonnell side of the family.   Susan Jane McDonnell should read Sarah Jane McDonnell.   When looking closely at the census photo you can see the 'ah' before the name Jane.   She's my grandmother.   Mary McDonnell was my great aunt.   She came to the US and became a Sister of Saint Joseph in Philadelphia.  She passed away in 2006.  If you're interested see: http://www.ssjphila.org/Archivelst.htm and look for Sister Jane Teresa McDonnell

My father and his sister Mary lived with John McDonnell when he lived in Philadelphia.

Supposedly my grandfather John Carroll came from the same area.  In looking at the link you sent, and using Sonnagh, Mayo the same as in your reference, it looks like this could be a match: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Sonnagh/Barnalyra…    However, I'm not sure.   We vaguely recall hearing that the reason my father lived with John McDonnell was because his father returned back to Ireland.   Grandmother McDonnell died when I was very young, and my parents have also passed on, so we don't know much about the Carroll/McDonnell side of the family as compared to my mothers side Gibbons/McNulty from the Commeen/Donegal area.

We were trying to schedule a trip to coincide with The Gathering, but by the time we found out it was tough coordinating something in 2013.   We're definitely going to be getting the Carroll side of the family to Ireland in 2014.   Any information is helpful.

    Thanks again.

    Regards,

    Tom Carroll

Barnalyra is the townland just south of Carn so it is likely where John came from.

I enjoyed the writeup of your great-aunt in the SSJ archives. I had SSJ sisters when I attended St. Ambrose grade school in North Philadelphia.

I tried unsuccessfully to look for a marriage index record for John and Sarah in the Swineford registration district.

I looked at the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilbeagh parish. There was a Martin McDonnell in Carn and six different Carrolls in Barnalyra http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/mayo/kilbeagh.htm

Let me know if you need additional assistance.

  • Roger,

Thanks again.   My best friend, Tom Sodano, went to St. Ambrose and we graduated from Cardinal Dougherty HS.   He's a priest now.  He lived nearby on Ormes St. across Roosevelt Blvd.   I grew up in the Olney section (St. Helenas Church).

    Regards,

    Tom

  • Roger,

CDHS '79.  My friend was '77.  I had cousins in CDHS around the same time as you.   I was in the band and know a few guys from those years, since we performed together in later years.   I think perhaps Bill Gilbert, a trombone player who was in a couple of my groups, graduated in '67.  It was a big school.

    Take care. Happy New Year!

    Regards,

    Tom
