Almost 50 years of searching for my roots Irish / English I will never give up, but I could really do with some help, Please.

My great Grandfather George Patrick Stevens possibly married Ellen Barragry in 1912 in Naas .

Ancestry.co.uk  shows a page 725 film No 101262  marriages of 3 couples the other ladies are

Lucy Moore and Bridget Lawlor. Hence  I am not 100% sure.

George Patrick Stevens is 100% the name of  my Grandfather`s father John Edmund Stevens born 1913 who married Kathleen Patricia Fitzpatrick born approx 1908 they married in Islington in London in 1936 and had a son.

Kathleen Patricia Stevens nee Fitzpatrick  sadly passed away in Bristol in 1960

  • Hi

If you want to confirm your great grandparents names you should start with your grandfather's birth.  Do you have a birth cert for John Edmund Stevens? That will give you the mothers maiden name and you will then be able to identify the correct marriage record.

  • Thanks Linda,

I took your advise, and now know that my great grand parents married in 1912 in Naas, and shortly after lived in Leeds.

My grandparents John Edmund Stevens(Chemist) and Kathleen Patricia Fitzpatrick  spent quite sometime in Islington and other places in London, my grandmother passed away in the Bristol area in 1960 her last address being in Dulverton. I believe my Grandfather possibly passed away in 2000 in London.

So thankyou again. Hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction and help me to find out  some more about my family , maybe someone even has a photo or a few memories they would be willing to share with me.

  • Hi Irene

That's great news.  If you can tell me the details from the marriage cert it would help to get a bit further back- fathers names and addresses for bride and groom.  The first place to look is the 1911 Census (free online http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie)

There is a George Stevens, age 23, living with his mother Julia in Blackrath and Athgarvan.

and then the 1901 Census (also free online) - didn't find George Stevens in 1901, but need more details.

Let me know what you have and I'll help get you started.

    Regards

    Linda

  • Hi Linda,

My grandad John Edmund Stevens was born 15.August 1913 in the Infirmary Leeds on his birth certificate his dad is noted as George Stevens and his mother as Ellen Stevens formerly Barragry.

His signature reads Geo  Stevens his Occupation is noted as ..of Independant means.

They lived at 2 Sunderland Terrace Leeds.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Marriage certificate shows John Edmund Stevens 23 years old( Chemist Assistant) married Kathleen Patricia Fitzpatrick 28 years old.

Johns father is noted as George Patrick Stevens(deceased) of Independant means.

Kathleens Father is noted as Stephen Fitzpatrick (deceased)Commercial Traveller( ????and  Fl???)

They lived at 21 Highbury Place Islington London.

As you see for great grandad there are 3 different christian names noted on 2 certificates George, Geo

    and George Patrick Stevens.

Grandadads Occupation was noted on my dads birth certificate as Chemist in 1936 so he must have qualified between October and December 1936. Possibly in London.

At the time of their sons birth they lived at 29 Lyme Street St Pancras.

I have reason to believe my Grandad passed away in 2000 in Twickenham.

Thankyou so much for your time.

    Regards

  • Hi Irene

The next step to get further back in your family tree is to order the marriage cert for George Stevens and Ellen Barragry.  You need to write to the GRO in Roscommon (address below) with the following details stating you want a COPY of the MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE FOR

George Stevens and Ellen Barragry, Quarter 4, 1912, Naas District, Volume 2, Page 725

The certificate costs ?4.  Obviously, you need to tell them where to post the certificate.

    The address for them is:

         General Register Office,
         Government Office
         Convent Road
         Roscommon, Ireland

This certificate will give you names, addresses, occupations, the church where the marriage took place and the names of the fathers (it might also say if fathers are deceased).  With this information you should be able to find the families on the 1901/1911 censuses and maybe in other data sources.  You'll also be able to look for further births, marriages and deaths.

I hope this helps.  Let me know if you've any questions.

    All the best.
