I am seeking information on my gg grandfather, Thomas Duffy (also known as Thomas Farrell).  Thomas was transported to Australia on board the ship Countess of Harcourt in 1822.  His trial took place on 19 April 1822 in Dublin Co and he was sentanced to life in prison.  I have no information about his crime but his trade/calling was recorded as a ploughman/labourer.  Thomas was a native of Meath Co and was 23 years of age when transported, so he was born in 1899. The records held in Australia do not indicate whether Thomas was married (but it has been suggested that Thomas was married to a young girl called Bridget Ward) when transported.  I have no details of his parent.  His mother's maiden name may have been Farrell but this is only an assumption.

I hope someone can help identify Thomas, his crime, his parents, brothers/sisters and possibly a wife and/or children. any assistance would be appreciated.

  • Hi Michael

There are 2 baptism records of Thomas Duffy 1799 in Meath on www.rootsireland.ie/

I wondered if it was the same record twice but found that 1 was from Dunshaughlin R C  parish and the other from Athboy R C

So, I'm not sure which is your man. You need to purchase credit in order to view the full record..

You may want to have a look at www.irishgenealogy.ie for Thomas Duffy 1899 Meath.

In the list of records that come up the 12th one down is Ireland - Australia Transportation Database.

There are some 8 records of Thoams Duffys there - the fourth is from Meath.
